Last updated: 14 October 2026. NYSC dates, rules and requirements change by batch, so confirm everything on the official portal and with your institution. We replaced an earlier version that had outdated dates and allowance information.
The National Youth Service Corps is a one-year national service for Nigerian graduates, usually under 30, who studied at home or abroad. Here is what you need to know about the 2026 cycle.

The 2026 cycle
NYSC runs several batches and streams a year. In 2026, Batch A Stream 1 camp ran from 21 January to 10 February and Stream 2 from 18 February to 10 March, according to published calendars. Batch B Stream I orientation took place nationwide from 10 to 30 June 2026, and Niger State corps members were relocated to the FCT permanent camp at Kubwa while their camp was renovated. Batch B Stream II was hosted in states including Osun, and NYSC announced that the 2026 Batch C Stream I orientation course would run from 30 September to 20 October 2026 in all 36 states and the FCT, with registration from 30 September to 2 October and swearing-in on 2 October, according to a statement from its information directorate. Some websites published different projected dates, so rely on the NYSC portal. Prospective corps members need a NIN for online registration, and a university notice also tells graduates to get NERD (Nigeria Education Repository and Databank) clearance and to check that their names, graduation dates and results match on the portal, or they may not be registered in camp. Stream II dates were not confirmed in the sources we could find.
NYSC’s Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, said the scheme aimed to mobilise about 450,000 prospective corps members in 2026, after the Federal Government approved 50,000 extra slots, and that the scheme tries to avoid deploying corps members to red zones.
The monthly allowance
The federal allowance is ₦77,000 a month, up from ₦33,000, following the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024 with effect from July 2024. Some places of primary assignment add their own stipends. NYSC has denied reports of different allowance payments and has said it is working on better kits, feeding and transport allowances in the 2027 budget cycle. See our guide on the minimum wage.

How to register
- Check your status. Your institution must have submitted your name on the senate list. If you are not on it, speak to your school’s NYSC liaison.
- Use only the official portal, portal.nysc.org.ng. Type the address yourself and register with your own email and phone number. Persons who ask for your login, or “registration assistants”, may be harvesting accounts.
- Complete biodata, course details and your photograph during the announced registration window.
- Print your call-up letter from the portal once the registration closes and you have been posted.
What to prepare for camp
- Printed call-up letter and your registration details.
- A National Identification Number, which is mandatory for mobilisation in 2026.
- Original certificates and photocopies, and a school clearance.
- A medical certificate from an approved facility, which has blocked some candidates at the gate.
- Passport photographs, white shirts, shorts or trousers, sports kit and basic toiletries.
Orientation lasts about three weeks and includes drills, lectures and skill acquisition. Read the camp rules carefully and follow them.

Redeployment and relocation
Posting changes are limited and are handled through the NYSC portal and state or national offices. NYSC has warned that fake “urgent notices” about redeployment have circulated, claiming applications were open for security, health or other reasons. Never pay anyone to change your posting.
Scams and false claims
- Fake portals and notices. Use only official NYSC channels.
- “Posting for sale”. No agent can legally buy you a posting. NYSC has also distanced itself from a proposed N200 levy mentioned by a student group, so ask the scheme before paying anything.
- Fake “exemption” offers. Exemptions are for specific categories only.
See our guides on internet scams and verifying news.
Planning your service year
- Money: budget for rent, transport and food. Rent and accommodation are among the biggest worries for corps members. See our guides on saving money and the cost of living.
- Safety: avoid travelling at night and, if it is late, stop at a military barracks, police station or NYSC office.
- Skills: use the year to learn marketable skills and build a network. See skills in demand, earning money online and side hustles.
- Next steps: prepare your CV and read our guides on CV writing and interviews.
The Numbers Behind the Scheme
- Mobilisation: the Director-General said the scheme would mobilise about 450,000 prospective corps members in 2026, after the Federal Government approved 50,000 extra slots. Another report quoted a figure of 418,000, so treat the total as approximate.
- Why delays happen: he attributed some delays to institutions failing to upload their senate-approved lists to the NYSC portal on time.
- Allowance: the monthly allowance rose from ₦33,000 to ₦77,000 after approval in September 2024, with payment starting in March 2025, and it remained ₦77,000 in 2026.
- Safety: the scheme says it avoids deploying corps members to red zones and, where they go to such states, restricts them to state capitals and major cities. Corps members are urged to avoid night travel.
How to Avoid Registration Problems
- Check that your name, date of graduation and results match on the NYSC portal before the registration window, because discrepancies can stop you registering in camp.
- Have your NIN ready, since it is required for online registration.
- Get NERD (Nigeria Education Repository and Databank) clearance if your institution requires it.
- Print your call-up letter from your dashboard, and register only within the stated dates.
Camp Basics
Orientation lasts about three weeks and covers drills, lectures and skills training. Pack light, carry your documents, and follow the camp rules, including the dress code and curfew. Camps can be moved, as happened when Niger State corps members were relocated to Kubwa in July 2026 while their camp was renovated, so always check the latest notice.
Scams to Watch
Posting is automated and NYSC does not sell postings. Do not pay anyone for “posting to a preferred state”, “bypass camp” or fake call-up letters, and use only the official portal. See our guide on internet scams.
