How to Make Money Blogging in Nigeria (2026): Niches, Google AdSense and Other Income

Last updated: 30 October 2026 · By Naijatipsland Editorial Team · Editorial policy

Blogging can earn money in Nigeria, but it is slower than most people expect. Traffic takes time to build, ad income depends on your audience, and many beginners quit before their site has a chance to rank. This guide explains the realistic ways a blog makes money, how Google AdSense works for Nigerian publishers (eligibility, verification and payment), how to choose a niche, and which mistakes to avoid. Checked 30 October 2026. We do not promise any income, and AdSense rules change, so confirm details in Google’s help centre. If you have not built a blog yet, start with our guides to launching a blog in Nigeria and step-by-step blog setup.

How blogs make money

Ways a blog can earn money
  • Display ads (such as Google AdSense): you show ads and are paid based on views or clicks. This needs steady traffic and is rarely the main income for a new blog.
  • Affiliate links: you recommend products and earn a commission when readers buy. See our guide to affiliate marketing in Nigeria.
  • Sponsored posts: brands pay you to feature them. Always label paid content clearly.
  • Your own products: e-books, templates, courses or paid newsletters. These often earn more per reader than ads.
  • Services: a blog proves your skills, so it can bring clients for writing, design, consulting or training. See freelance websites for Nigerians.

Most successful blogs combine several streams. Our broader guide to monetising content covers email lists and mixing revenue.

Choosing a niche

Pick a topic you can write about for months and that people search for. Ideas that suit Nigerian audiences include personal finance and saving, small business and side hustles, jobs and scholarships, tech and phones, health information from reliable sources, cooking and local food, education, and local news. Check that you can list at least 50 article ideas, look at what already ranks to see if you can add something better, and think about how the niche could earn: ads, affiliate links, products or services. Avoid topics where you would have to copy others, and be careful with health and money topics, which need accurate, well-sourced writing.

How Google AdSense works for Nigerian publishers

AdSense lets website owners show Google ads. According to Google’s help pages:

  • Eligibility: you must be at least 18, your content must follow AdSense Program policies, and you must be able to access the HTML source code of your site. Google expects original, high-quality content that attracts an audience.
  • Verification: Google says the identity verification threshold is $0, so you must verify your identity before ads show and payments start. Address verification applies at $10, and Google mails a PIN to your payment address, which can take 2 to 3 weeks by standard post. You must enter it before you can be paid.
  • Payment threshold: payment is issued when your balance reaches $100 (or local equivalent) by the end of the month, between the 21st and 26th.
  • Payment method: you can choose how to be paid once earnings reach $10 (or local equivalent). Available options depend on your payment address, so check which ones Google shows for Nigeria in your account. Your name and address must match your documents.

Before you apply

  1. Publish original, useful posts, ideally 20 or more, with clear headings and images that you have the right to use.
  2. Add an About page, Contact page, Privacy Policy and clear navigation. See our guides to launching a blog for the basics.
  3. Make sure the site loads fast on mobile and has no broken pages or copied content.
  4. Be ready to add the code AdSense gives you, and the ads.txt file it asks for, so ad serving is authorised for your domain.

Approval can take days or weeks. If you are rejected, read the reason, fix the issue (usually thin, copied or low-value content), and reapply later instead of changing domains repeatedly.

What can you realistically earn?

Nobody can promise a number. Ad income depends on your traffic, where your readers live, what they read and how often they click. A new blog may earn nothing for months. Affiliate links and your own products often matter more than ads. Track results in Google Analytics or Search Console, publish consistently, and judge the blog over a year, not a month.

How to get traffic

  • Write for search: answer real questions clearly, with accurate, up-to-date information and sources.
  • Update old posts when facts change.
  • Use social media such as Facebook groups, X and TikTok to send readers to your posts.
  • Build an email list so you own your audience.
  • Link between your posts to keep readers on your site.
  • Earn links and mentions by publishing useful, original data or guides.
Blogging mistakes that cost money

Mistakes and policy traps

  • Copying or spinning content: Google’s systems and AdSense reviewers reward original work.
  • Clicking your own ads or asking others to: this is invalid activity and can get your account banned.
  • Buying cheap traffic or using bots: invalid traffic can end your AdSense account.
  • Relying on one income source: ad earnings change with seasons and algorithms.
  • Publishing health, legal or financial claims without sources: accuracy and trust matter.
  • Giving up too soon. Blogs compound slowly.

Scams to avoid

Be wary of anyone who sells “AdSense approval”, ready-made blogs with “guaranteed earnings”, paid traffic packages, or accounts for rent. These break policy or simply take your money. Frequently asked questions

Can I make money blogging in Nigeria?

Yes, but it usually takes months of consistent work before income appears, and results vary widely.

How much traffic do I need for AdSense?

Google’s eligibility page does not set a single traffic number. It focuses on original content that attracts an audience and follows its policies.

Does Google AdSense pay in Nigeria?

Google lists payment options by country in its help centre. Check the options your account shows and keep your bank details accurate.

Do I need a custom domain?

You need a site whose HTML you can access. A custom domain also looks more professional and gives you control, so most serious bloggers use one.

Is AI-written content allowed?

Google expects helpful, original, accurate content. Mass-produced low-value pages risk poor rankings and AdSense rejection, so edit and fact-check carefully.

Bottom line

A blog can become a real income source if you pick a niche, publish accurate original content, protect your AdSense account and add affiliate, product or service income over time. Treat it as a long project, ignore shortcut sellers and keep learning from your data.
