Red Velvet Wedding Cakes in Port Harcourt (2026): Prices, Bakers and Ordering Tips

Last updated: 2 November 2026 · By Naijatipsland Editorial Team · Editorial policy

Checked 2 November 2026. Red velvet has become one of the most requested wedding cake flavours in Port Harcourt: deep red sponge, a hint of cocoa and a tangy cream cheese or buttercream finish that looks striking against white or gold decoration. It is also one of the more expensive flavours to make, and with wedding season building towards December, couples are being quoted anything from under ₦100,000 to well over ₦400,000.

This guide sets out realistic 2026 price ranges by size and tier, explains what pushes the price up, names a few Port Harcourt bakers you can check for yourself, gives an ordering timeline and shows how to avoid the fake “Instagram bakers” who disappear with deposits. Prices are ranges from published baker price guides and online listings, not quotes. Always get a written quote for your own design.

How much does a red velvet wedding cake cost in Port Harcourt?

Wedding cake price ranges by size in Port Harcourt in 2026

The Yefepere 2026 cake price guide puts most Port Harcourt cakes in a band of about ₦45,000 to ₦200,000, and describes prices in the city as moderate because many home bakers work from estates with lower overheads. Tiered wedding cakes sit above that band. A Jiji listing in Port Harcourt advertised a four-tier wedding cake at ₦250,000 and a traditional wedding cake at ₦350,000 when we checked, while Pulse Nigeria’s 2025 round-up of Lagos wedding cakes listed three-tier cakes at around ₦250,000 and more elaborate designs up to about ₦450,000.

Ranges from the Yefepere cake price guide (updated 2026), Jiji Port Harcourt listings checked 2 November 2026 and Pulse Nigeria (March 2025, Lagos). Servings depend on how the cake is cut.

Red velvet usually costs a little more than vanilla of the same size. Bakers point to the extra cocoa, buttermilk, food colouring and the cream cheese frosting many couples want. Ask for the red velvet price separately, rather than assuming a vanilla quote applies.

What affects the price

What affects the price of a red velvet wedding cake
  • Fondant or buttercream. The Yefepere guide puts buttercream cakes at about ₦40,000 to ₦120,000 and fondant cakes at ₦50,000 to ₦180,000 and above, because fondant paste is largely imported and takes more skill and structure. Fondant also handles heat better, which matters in Port Harcourt.
  • Number of tiers. Every tier means more sponge, filling, dowels and decorating time. A tall three-tier cake can cost far more than one wide tier with the same number of slices.
  • Cream cheese frosting. It tastes great with red velvet but softens in heat. Many bakers will suggest a cream cheese filling with a firmer buttercream or fondant outside for outdoor events.
  • Decoration. Sugar flowers, gold leaf, hand-painting and custom toppers add both materials and hours.
  • Delivery and set-up. The same guide puts delivery within major Port Harcourt districts at about ₦3,000 to ₦5,500, but a tiered cake often needs a baker to travel with it and stack it at the venue, which is usually charged separately. Same-day rush orders can add ₦20,000 to ₦50,000.
  • Season. November to January is the busiest wedding period. Expect fewer discounts and earlier booking cut-offs.

Port Harcourt bakers you can check

These are businesses we found with their own websites or credible listings that mention Port Harcourt. We have not tasted their cakes and this is not a ranking or an endorsement. Always confirm the branch address, current prices and availability directly with the baker.

  • Dripples Cakes runs its own website (dripplescakes.com), says it serves Port Harcourt, Lagos and Abuja, and mentions a Port Harcourt outlet at Ada George. Its site lists wedding cake designs, including traditional and white-and-gold styles, and an 8-inch cake mixing chocolate, vanilla and red velvet at about ₦59,500. Wedding cake prices are on request.
  • Diva Cakes runs divacakes.com.ng, which advertises cakes in Lagos, Port Harcourt, Uyo and Magboro. Its site lists a “Velvet Cake” from about ₦38,500 to ₦52,900 before toppings and VAT, and a wedding cakes category with prices on request. Third-party listings give different Port Harcourt addresses, so confirm the current branch with the company.

Beyond these, Port Harcourt has many small home bakers in areas such as Woji, Rumuola, Peter Odili Road, Trans-Amadi, GRA, Choba and Ada George. Some are excellent and cheaper than bigger brands. Judge any baker, big or small, by the checks below rather than by follower numbers.

Ordering timeline

  • 3 to 4 months before: shortlist three bakers, send your guest numbers, venue and inspiration photos, and ask for quotes.
  • 2 to 3 months before: attend a tasting (some bakers charge for tasting boxes and deduct it from the order), choose flavours and finish, then pay a deposit to secure the date.
  • 1 month before: confirm final design, serving numbers, delivery time and who will receive the cake at the venue.
  • 1 to 2 weeks before: pay the balance if agreed and share the venue contact and access details.
  • On the day: have someone inspect the cake on arrival and keep it out of direct sun and away from generators and hot lights.

For December weddings, start earlier: popular bakers often stop taking tiered orders weeks ahead.

Tasting and the questions to ask

  • Is the red velvet made with real cocoa and buttermilk, and what frosting do you recommend for an indoor or outdoor venue?
  • Is the price for real cake in every tier, or are any tiers dummies (styrofoam)? Dummy tiers can save money if you need height but fewer slices.
  • How many slices does this design give, and what size slice are you assuming?
  • What exactly is included: cake board, stand, topper, fresh flowers, delivery, stacking?
  • What happens if the cake is damaged in transit, or if the date changes?
  • Can I see photos of cakes you made for real events, and speak to a past client?

How to avoid fake Instagram bakers

How to spot fake Instagram cake bakers

Every wedding season brings stories of couples who paid in full to a beautiful Instagram page and received nothing. Protect yourself:

  • Reverse-search the photos. Many fake pages copy cakes from foreign bakers. Our reverse image search guide shows how.
  • Look for a real-world trace: a shop or kitchen you can visit, a Google Business listing, a website, past clients tagging them in event photos.
  • Pay a deposit, not the full amount, and pay into an account in the business name where possible.
  • Get the order in writing, with the design, flavours, size, date, delivery time and price.
  • Be wary of prices far below others. Three tiers for the price of one is a red flag.
  • If you are scammed, act fast: see how to try to recover money sent to the wrong account and how to report cybercrime in Nigeria. If you are the baker, learn to spot a fake credit alert before releasing a cake.

Keeping the cake safe on the day

Port Harcourt heat and humidity are the biggest risk to a beautiful cake once it leaves the bakery. A few simple steps prevent most disasters:

  • Agree a delivery window close to the reception start, not early morning, so the cake spends as little time as possible in a hot hall.
  • Ask the venue for a cool spot away from windows, generators, stage lights and the buffet heaters. An air-conditioned holding room is ideal.
  • Name one person (not the bride or groom) to receive the cake, check it against the agreed design and sign for it.
  • Plan the cutting. Tell the caterer or baker how many slices you need and whether some tiers are for guests and some for family to take home.
  • Keep the top tier if you want to: wrap it well and refrigerate it the same night.

Alternatives in other cities

If your wedding is in Lagos or Abuja, prices tend to be higher. The Yefepere guide describes Lagos and Abuja as the most expensive cake markets, while Pulse’s 2025 Lagos list put most three-tier cakes between about ₦230,000 and ₦450,000. Uyo and other South-South cities are often a little cheaper than Port Harcourt for similar designs. If you are bringing a cake from another city, remember that a long road trip in heat is risky for tiered cakes; it is usually safer to hire a local baker.

Cake is only one line in the budget. See our guide to planning a Nigerian traditional wedding on a budget, the cost of party jollof rice and Christmas food prices if your wedding falls in December.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a 3-tier red velvet wedding cake in Port Harcourt?

Expect roughly ₦250,000 to ₦450,000 or more in 2026, depending on size, finish and decoration. Simple buttercream designs sit at the lower end; fondant with sugar flowers at the upper end.

Is fondant or buttercream better in Port Harcourt heat?

Fondant usually holds up better in heat and humidity. Buttercream and especially whipped cream can soften or slide, so keep them indoors and cool.

How far ahead should I order a wedding cake?

Two to three months is a safe minimum for a tiered cake, and earlier for November to January weddings.

Can I save money on a wedding cake?

Yes. Use a smaller display cake plus sheet cakes in the kitchen, choose buttercream over fondant, use fresh flowers instead of sugar flowers, or add dummy tiers for height.

How do I know a cake baker is real?

Check for a physical address or Google listing, real client tags, a tasting option and a business bank account. Never pay 100% upfront to a page you cannot verify.

Disclaimer: prices are ranges from published price guides and online listings checked on 2 November 2026 and will vary by baker, design and date. Businesses named are examples you can check, not endorsements or rankings. Confirm prices, addresses and terms directly before paying.

  1. A tip from the guide: ask whether every tier is real cake or a dummy, because dummy tiers can add height for less money. How much did you pay for your wedding cake in PH, and would you use the same baker again?
