How to Start a YouTube Channel in Nigeria and Get Monetised (2026): Requirements, Payments and a Realistic Plan

Last updated: 24 October 2026 · By Naijatipsland Editorial Team · Editorial policy

Every month thousands of Nigerians open YouTube Studio hoping to turn a phone and an idea into income. Some do it. Many stall at a few hundred subscribers because they never learned what YouTube actually requires, how the money is paid, or that the rules for new creators are about to get harder. This guide covers all three, using YouTube’s own help pages rather than rumours, so you can plan a channel with open eyes.

One caution first: nobody can promise you a timeline or an income. YouTube pays for watch time and views, and those depend on your topic, your consistency and a lot of patience. What follows is the process, the numbers that matter and the mistakes that cost people their channels.

The short answer

  • Nigeria is on YouTube’s list of places where you can sign up for the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), so you can earn from ads once you qualify.
  • Today’s ad-revenue bar: 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 public long-form watch hours in the last 365 days, or 10 million public Shorts views in the last 90 days.
  • Early tier: 500 subscribers, 3 public uploads in 90 days, plus 3,000 watch hours or 3 million Shorts views opens fan funding such as memberships and Super Chat, where available.
  • From 1 February 2027 new creators need 8,000 watch hours or 20 million Shorts views for ads, still with 1,000 subscribers.
  • Payment: earnings are paid through AdSense once your balance reaches USD 100.

Is YouTube monetisation available in Nigeria?

Yes. Nigeria appears on YouTube’s official list of areas where creators can join the Partner Program. That matters because YouTube lets you start earning only if you live somewhere the programme is offered, and each individual feature (ads, memberships, Super Chat, shopping) also has its own regional availability. If a feature is missing from your Studio account, it may simply not be offered in Nigeria yet. Check the Earn tab in YouTube Studio rather than trusting a screenshot from a video made in another country.

You also need to be 18 or older, or have a parent or guardian handle the AdSense account. Your Google account must have 2-Step Verification switched on, and your channel must have no active Community Guidelines strikes.

YouTube Partner Program requirements for ad revenue and fan funding

The two YouTube earning tiers explained

Tier 1: fan funding at 500 subscribers

The lower tier asks for 500 subscribers, at least three public uploads in the last 90 days, and either 3,000 public watch hours in 365 days or 3 million Shorts views in 90 days. Reaching it can unlock channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Thanks and shopping features, depending on what is offered where you live. It is a useful early win, but it is not the same as getting paid for ads.

Tier 2: ad revenue at 1,000 subscribers

The full programme requires 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 public long-form watch hours in the past year, or 10 million public Shorts views in the past 90 days. Once you qualify you apply in YouTube Studio, accept the contract modules, link an AdSense account and wait for a review of the whole channel, which YouTube says typically takes about a month. Only watch hours on public long videos count, so private, unlisted and deleted videos do not help.

What changes on 1 February 2027

YouTube has announced updates to the Partner Program that take effect on 1 February 2027. The ones that matter for a new Nigerian creator:

  • Higher entry bar for ads. New creators will need 8,000 qualified watch hours in 365 days, or 20 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days, in addition to 1,000 subscribers. Creators already in YPP are not affected.
  • The early tier does not change. Fan funding, creator partnerships and shopping still open at 500 subscribers and 3,000 watch hours or 3 million Shorts views.
  • Shorts earnings. To earn from the monthly Shorts pool, creators will need 10 million qualified Shorts views over 90 days. Missing it does not remove you from YPP or affect long-form earnings.
  • Activity rules. A channel will count as active with 1,000 qualified watch hours in a year, or 1 million Shorts views in 90 days, or two long videos or five Shorts uploaded every 90 days.
  • New terms. Existing partners must accept the updated terms in YouTube Studio by 31 January 2027 or they stop earning from the affected features from 1 February. Not accepting does not remove the channel from YPP, and accepting later restores access.

The practical lesson: if you are close to the current thresholds, every month you keep the channel moving matters. If you are just starting, plan for the higher 2027 numbers.

How to start a YouTube channel in Nigeria, step by step

  1. Create a Google account for the channel. Use a strong password and switch on 2-Step Verification straight away, because you cannot join YPP without it.
  2. Create the channel from YouTube, choose a name that matches your topic and is easy to say aloud, and add a clear description with the subject and your upload schedule.
  3. Pick one niche. Channels that mix cooking, politics and comedy confuse both viewers and the recommendation system. Choose a topic you can make fifty videos about.
  4. Use the gear you have. A recent phone, daylight near a window and clean audio beat an expensive camera with echo. Audio is the first thing viewers forgive least.
  5. Plan your first ten videos around questions real people ask. Search the topic on YouTube, read the suggestions that appear and the comments on bigger channels.
  6. Make thumbnails and titles honest. They should promise what the video delivers.
  7. Publish on a fixed schedule and review your Analytics every week for what keeps people watching.
90-day plan to start a YouTube channel in Nigeria

Your first 30 days: a checklist

  • Week 1: create the channel, switch on 2-Step Verification, write the channel description and choose your niche.
  • Week 2: film and publish your first two videos. Do not wait for perfect; the first ones are practice.
  • Week 3: read Analytics. Note where viewers leave and fix the first 30 seconds of the next video.
  • Week 4: publish two more, reply to every comment and ask viewers what they want to see next.
  • Every month: check the Earn tab in YouTube Studio to see how close you are to the thresholds.

Treat the first three months as learning time. The creators who reach the thresholds are usually the ones who kept publishing after the early videos got only a handful of views.

What kinds of channels do well

There is no secret topic, but some patterns hold. Practical, searchable videos (how to do something, how a process works, a comparison) keep earning views months after they are posted, because people keep searching for them. Local knowledge is an advantage: Nigerian recipes, exam guidance, phone repair, farming, small-business advice, gist explained clearly, and diaspora life all have audiences that international channels serve poorly. Long videos and Shorts serve different goals. Shorts can bring subscribers and views fast, but only long-form watch hours count towards the 4,000-hour route, and Shorts revenue is paid from a shared pool rather than per ad. Many creators use Shorts to find an audience and long videos to build the watch time.

How the money reaches you

YouTube pays creators through AdSense. According to YouTube’s help centre, the thresholds for a US dollar account are: USD 10 to trigger identity verification, USD 10 to choose a payment method, and USD 100 before a payment is issued. Payments are issued between the 21st and 26th of the month once your balance is above the threshold and there are no holds on the account. Your payment options are shown inside your AdSense account once you reach the selection threshold, so look there rather than assuming a method.

Tax. YouTube notes that you may owe tax on your earnings in the country where you live. Google may also ask for tax information in your AdSense account. If you start earning meaningful money, keep records and speak to a qualified Nigerian tax adviser. Do not rely on a video or a forum post for this.

Ways to earn before you are monetised

  • Sponsorships and brand deals. Small businesses often pay for a mention long before a channel qualifies for ads. Agree the deliverables and payment in writing.
  • Affiliate links. Recommend products you truly use and disclose the link clearly. Our TikTok guide, how to make money on TikTok in Nigeria, explains brand deals and how to avoid task scams, and the same warnings apply on YouTube.
  • Your own service. A channel is a shop window for editing, teaching, design or consulting.
  • Fan funding. Memberships and Super Thanks, once the 500-subscriber tier is reached and the feature is available to you.

Mistakes that cost Nigerian creators their channels

  • Buying subscribers or views. It breaks YouTube’s spam policies and the fake accounts add nothing to real watch time.
  • Reusing other people’s videos. Clips, music and footage you do not own can bring copyright claims or a reuse rejection. Mass-produced or repetitive content can also be refused monetisation.
  • Ignoring strikes. An active Community Guidelines strike blocks you from joining YPP.
  • Going silent. Under the current rules monetisation can be removed from channels with no uploads or Posts activity for six months or more.
  • Trusting “guaranteed monetisation” sellers. No one can guarantee approval and no honest service asks for your password. See how internet scams work.
  • Expecting instant results. Most channels take many months to reach their first thousand subscribers.

Frequently asked questions

Can I monetise a YouTube channel in Nigeria?

Yes. Nigeria is on YouTube’s list of YPP areas, and you can earn once your channel meets the requirements and is approved.

How many subscribers do I need?

1,000 for ads, with 4,000 public watch hours or 10 million Shorts views, and 500 for the early fan-funding tier. The entry numbers for new creators rise in February 2027.

How long does approval take?

YouTube says the review of your channel typically takes about a month. If you are declined you can fix the issue and reapply.

How much will I earn?

It varies with your audience, topic and the ads shown, so any fixed figure you read online is a guess. Check your own Analytics once you are monetised.

Do I need a laptop?

No. A smartphone and the YouTube Studio app are enough to begin, though a laptop makes editing easier later.
