JAMB 2026 Admission Updates: Cut-Off Marks, CAPS Deadlines and 2027 UTME Plans

Last updated: 13 October 2026. JAMB announces its decisions through its official channels, and institutions set their own rules above the national minimum. Check jamb.gov.ng and your chosen institution before you act on anything you read, including this guide.

JAMB 2026/2027 at a glance

  • Where we are: the 2026 UTME is over. The main sittings ran from 16 to 25 April, the mop-up held on 13 June, and the admission exercise is now in progress.
  • Minimum cut-off marks: 150 for universities and colleges of nursing, and 100 for polytechnics and monotechnics, set at the policy meeting on 11 May 2026.
  • Admission deadlines: 31 October 2026 for universities, and 31 December 2026 for polytechnics, monotechnics and colleges of education, as reported from the policy meeting.
  • All admissions go through CAPS: JAMB says admissions outside its Central Admissions Processing System are illegal.
  • Next UTME: JAMB had not confirmed 2027 dates in the sources we checked. Unofficial sites list January 2027 for registration, so treat that as unconfirmed.

If you sat the 2026 UTME, the next few weeks matter more than the exam itself, because admission lists are being uploaded and offers must be accepted before deadlines close. If you plan to sit in 2027, now is the time to fix your NIN, understand the costs and learn how the process works. This guide covers where the 2026 exercise stands, what the cut-off marks mean, how to handle CAPS, what to do if your score falls short, and how to prepare for the next UTME.

2026 Cut-Off Marks: What They Really Mean

At its 2026 policy meeting on 11 May, chaired by Education Minister Tunji Alausa, JAMB retained the national minimum admissible scores: 150 for universities and colleges of nursing and 100 for polytechnics and monotechnics. Vice-chancellors present voted to keep the university benchmark.

The key point is that these are floors, not guarantees. A score of 150 makes you eligible for consideration, but competitive institutions and courses set far higher marks, and some federal universities set their own benchmark around 180 to 200 or more. Courses such as Medicine, Law, Pharmacy and Engineering are the most demanding. No institution may admit a candidate below the national minimum, but each can raise its own mark and run its own screening. Candidates must also be at least 16 years old, a rule the policy meeting retained.

CAPS: How to Protect Your Admission

The Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) is JAMB’s portal for admissions. The policy meeting declared that admissions outside CAPS are illegal and warned that changing a candidate’s course without consent would attract sanctions. To protect yourself:

  1. Check CAPS regularly for your status, because offers can appear without any call or message.
  2. Make sure your O-level results are uploaded and your details match your NIN. Mismatches can block an offer.
  3. Accept or reject offers within the time shown. Reports say you have about four weeks, after which an offer can go to someone else, so act promptly.
  4. Accept only the offer you will actually take. Once you accept, you are expected to proceed with that institution.
  5. Do not pay for “admission” outside the official process. Anyone selling guaranteed admission is running a scam.

Admission Deadlines to Watch

At the policy meeting, stakeholders set deadlines for concluding the 2026 admission exercise. Reports put the date for universities at 31 October 2026, and 31 December 2026 for polytechnics, monotechnics and colleges of education. JAMB’s registrar warned that after a category’s deadline, institutions that have not concluded admissions would lose access to candidates for the session, and affected candidates may become ineligible. If you are waiting on a university, check your CAPS status this week.

If Your Score Is Below the Cut-Off

A low score is not the end of the road. Consider these options:

  • Polytechnic or monotechnic: the minimum is 100, and many courses lead to HND and degree top-ups.
  • College of education: reports say candidates for NCE and education courses no longer need the UTME from the 2026/2027 session, with admission based on credit passes. Confirm the requirements with the college.
  • Direct Entry (DE): if you later gain an OND, NCE or A-level qualification, you can enter at a higher level and skip the UTME.
  • Resit in 2027: use the months ahead to study, fix any NIN issues and retake with a clearer plan.
  • Change your course or institution: some courses have lower demand and lower cut-off marks, but make any change through CAPS, never through an outsider.

Planning for the 2027 UTME

JAMB usually announces the next year’s registration window, fees and exam dates late in the year or early in the new one. For 2026, registration opened on 26 January and closed on 28 February, with the exam in April. Plan around a similar calendar, but wait for JAMB’s own announcement. Some unofficial websites already list 19 January 2027 for registration and quote fees, but we could not confirm these from JAMB.

What the 2026 UTME cost

JAMB published three e-PIN categories for 2026: UTME without the optional mock at ₦7,200, UTME with the mock at ₦8,700 and Direct Entry at ₦5,700. The breakdown covered the application fee, the compulsory reading text, CBT centre charges and bank charges.

Get your paperwork ready now

  • NIN: JAMB relies on NIMC data, so a mismatch in your name or date of birth can cause problems. Our guide on how to verify your NIN explains how to check and correct it early.
  • Age: the minimum age for admission is 16 by the date set for the session. Younger candidates need a special waiver and very high scores.
  • Accredited CBT centres: register only at JAMB-approved centres. JAMB has delisted centres in the past, and fake agents defraud candidates.
  • The reading text: JAMB prescribes a novel each year. Buy it when announced and prepare for questions on it.

Exam-Day Basics

Check your slip for your centre, date and reporting time and arrive early, because JAMB has tightened reporting rules. Bring the items your slip lists, expect biometric verification at the door and do not carry prohibited items. Follow the instructions of the invigilators and report any technical problem on the spot rather than afterwards.

Avoiding Scams in the Admission Season

Admission season brings racketeers. Never pay anyone for a guaranteed admission, never share your CAPS or JAMB profile login with an agent, and verify announcements on jamb.gov.ng and your institution’s official site. See our guides on how to avoid internet scams and common WhatsApp scams.

After the UTME: Results, Screening and Course Choices

  • Check your result through official channels. JAMB releases results on its own portal and through its official services. Be wary of websites that charge you to see a score you can check yourself.
  • Print your original result slip if you need it, using JAMB’s official process, and keep a copy of your registration details.
  • Expect school screening. After the policy meeting, universities and other institutions announce their own screening or post-UTME exercises. Each school sets its own dates, fees and requirements, so follow your institution’s official website and notices rather than social media rumours.
  • Check your O-level results. Your WAEC or NECO results must be uploaded and must meet the requirements for your course, including the right subject combination and credit passes.
  • Review your course choice. Competitive courses will rarely admit candidates at the minimum cut-off, so think carefully about related courses or alternative institutions where your score is competitive.

How to Improve Your Score if You Resit

  1. Study the syllabus, not just past questions. JAMB publishes subject syllabuses, and questions follow them.
  2. Practise on a computer. The UTME is computer-based, so get used to reading and answering on screen and managing your time.
  3. Review your weak subjects early. Use your 2026 score breakdown to see where you lost marks and spend the most time there.
  4. Read the prescribed novel. It is a compulsory part of the English paper and is easy marks for candidates who read it.
  5. Plan your registration early. Fix NIN, age and document issues before registration opens so you do not lose days at the last minute.
