Choosing the wrong English test is one of the most expensive mistakes Nigerians planning to study or work abroad make. A test can be accepted by a university but rejected by the Home Office, and test fees in Nigeria now run to hundreds of thousands of naira. This guide compares IELTS, PTE and TOEFL for Nigerians: which ones count for a UK visa, how fees, results times and validity compare, and how to decide. Checked 8 November 2026. Fees, centres and rules change, so always confirm on the official booking page and on GOV.UK before you pay. Prices quoted from third-party pages are marked as such.
The short answer
- For a UK visa: you need an approved Secure English Language Test (SELT). That means IELTS for UKVI (or IELTS Life Skills for some routes), PTE Academic UKVI or PTE Home, LanguageCert SELT versions, Trinity ISE/GESE or PSI Skills for English UKVI. TOEFL is not on the UK visa SELT list.
- For a university offer: many UK universities accept IELTS Academic, PTE Academic and often TOEFL iBT, but entry rules vary by course.
- For the US: TOEFL and IELTS are widely accepted by universities; check each school.
- For Canada and Australia: several tests are accepted, but accepted tests depend on the programme and immigration stream, so check the specific requirement.
Nigeria is not on the UK’s list of majority English-speaking countries for exemption purposes, so Nigerian applicants usually have to prove English with a test or a qualifying degree. Check the rules for your route on GOV.UK.
What counts as a SELT for the UK
GOV.UK says the test must be on the approved list, taken at an approved test location and awarded within the two years before you apply. Results are valid for two years. The approved providers outside the UK are PSI Services (UK) Ltd, the IELTS SELT Consortium, LANGUAGECERT and Pearson. The named tests include IELTS for UKVI, PTE Academic UKVI, PTE Home, LANGUAGECERT SELT tests, Trinity ISE and GESE (in the UK) and Skills for English UKVI. A non-UKVI test, even with the same name, will not do.
Other rules from GOV.UK: your name on the booking must match your passport or ID, you must include your SELT unique reference number in your application, and you should use official provider channels where possible. Routes needing reading, writing, speaking and listening include Skilled Worker, Health and Care Worker and Student. Partner, parent and settlement routes generally test speaking and listening only.

IELTS: the most familiar choice
IELTS is offered through the British Council and IDP. For UK visa purposes you must book IELTS for UKVI (Academic or General Training, depending on the route). Academic and General Training are now delivered by computer in Nigeria, according to an authorised centre’s page.
- Fee in Nigeria: one authorised British Council partner centre listed a standard fee of ₦299,000 for Academic or General Training and ₦335,500 for IELTS UKVI (discounted codes were advertised). The British Council raised its Nigerian fee to ₦139,000 in February 2024, and prices have risen since, so treat these as indicative and check the live price.
- Results: centres describe computer-delivered results as arriving in roughly three to five days, though timing varies.
- Validity: two years for visa purposes.
- Speaking test: face to face with an examiner, which some candidates prefer.
- One-skill retake: available for a fee within a set window, according to the same centre.
PTE Academic UKVI: faster results
PTE is run by Pearson and is fully computer-based, including an AI-scored speaking section. Pearson lists PTE Academic UKVI at £230 and PTE Home at £170 in the UK as of late September 2026 (as cited by a PTE guide); Nigerian pricing is set locally, so check Pearson’s booking page.
- UK visa use: PTE Academic UKVI is accepted for B2-level routes such as Skilled Worker, Health and Care Worker and degree-level Student visas. It is generally listed at 59 per skill for B2 and 43 per skill for B1 routes (confirm the required CEFR level for your route on GOV.UK).
- Results: usually within about two business days, sometimes up to five.
- Availability: UKVI centres are fewer than standard PTE centres and the test cannot be taken at home, so book early.
- Partner and settlement routes: PTE Home or another speaking and listening test is typically used.

TOEFL iBT: good for admission, not for a UK visa
TOEFL iBT is run by ETS and is popular for US universities. Many UK universities accept it for admission, but it does not satisfy the UK visa requirement for a Student or Skilled Worker application. If you need both an offer and a visa, take IELTS for UKVI or PTE Academic UKVI, so one result covers both. If you are applying to the US as well, check whether your target schools accept IELTS or PTE.
Side-by-side comparison
| Feature | IELTS (UKVI) | PTE Academic UKVI | TOEFL iBT |
|---|---|---|---|
| Accepted for UK visa | Yes (UKVI version) | Yes (UKVI version) | No |
| Format | Computer, face-to-face speaking | Computer, AI-scored | Computer |
| Typical results time | About 3 to 5 days (centre-reported) | About 2 business days | Check ETS |
| Validity for UK visa | 2 years | 2 years | Not applicable |
| Best for | UK visas and wide acceptance | Fast results, UK visas | US admissions |
How to choose
- Start with the destination and route. UK visa: UKVI test only. US university: check the school’s accepted tests.
- Check the exact level. Read your route’s CEFR requirement on GOV.UK before choosing a test.
- Match the test to your strengths. If you dislike speaking to a computer, IELTS may suit you. If you want quick results and are comfortable typing, PTE may suit you.
- Check seat availability and your timeline. Book early, especially for UKVI seats.
- Compare total cost. Include retake risk, transport, accommodation and preparation materials.
- Book only through official channels. Avoid agents who promise guaranteed scores, “leaked” papers or paid proxy test-takers; it can lead to bans and visa refusals.

Booking and test-day checklist
- Name on booking matches your passport exactly.
- Original, valid ID with photo on test day.
- Arrive early; follow the centre’s rules on phones and bags.
- Save your SELT reference number for the visa application.
- Do not accept private help with answers. Cheating can lead to a ban.
Scams to avoid
Fake booking websites and social media agents sometimes charge for “discounted” seats or promise guaranteed bands. GOV.UK advises checking third-party booking providers’ credentials and using official provider channels where possible. See our UK visas for Nigerians guide for refusal reasons and scam warnings.

FAQ
Is TOEFL accepted for a UK student visa?
No. TOEFL is not on the UK SELT list. Some universities accept it for admission, but you will still need an approved test for the visa unless you qualify for an exemption or your sponsor can assess your English.
Is IELTS or PTE easier?
Neither is universally easier. Format differs; choose the one that suits your strengths and target score.
Do I need IELTS for UKVI or normal IELTS?
For a UK visa that requires a SELT you need IELTS for UKVI. Regular IELTS is fine for many university offers but may not satisfy the visa.
How long is an English test valid for UK visas?
Two years from the date it is awarded, according to GOV.UK.
How much is IELTS in Nigeria?
An authorised British Council partner listed ₦299,000 standard and ₦335,500 for UKVI in late 2026. Check the British Council or IDP for the current fee.
Can Nigerians take PTE in Nigeria?
Pearson has approved test centres in various countries, but UKVI centre availability is limited. Check Pearson’s website for Nigerian centres, or whether you must travel.
Can I use one test for several countries?
Often yes for admissions, but visa rules are country-specific. A UKVI version may be required for the UK.
What if I fail one skill?
Some tests allow one-skill retakes, but UK visa rules may require passing all components in the same test from the same provider.
Bottom line
For a UK visa, book IELTS for UKVI or PTE Academic UKVI (or another approved SELT). Use TOEFL only where the school or country accepts it. Confirm the level, fee and centre on official pages before paying, and never buy scores or leaked papers.
