Morning roundup · Sunday 8 November 2026 · By Ade Adeniyi, Founder and Editor
Nigeria woke up to world champions this morning, and the celebrations have moved from the pitch in Rabat to the Presidency in Abuja. Here is what happened overnight and what to look out for on a busy final Sunday before the international break.
Today at a glance
- Oluebube Umejiaku wins the Golden Ball as Tinubu salutes the U-17 world champions.
- Arsenal go six points clear in the Premier League; Leeds end Tottenham’s revival.
- Umar Sadiq starts as Real Madrid win 3-0 at Valencia.
- NPFL: Rangers can stretch their lead at home to Kwara United today.
- Lando Norris on pole for a wet Sao Paulo Grand Prix.
- Alcaraz v Shelton for the Paris Masters title this afternoon.
1. Umejiaku crowned best player as Tinubu hails the Flamingos
What happened
After Saturday’s 2-1 win over Japan in the U-17 Women’s World Cup final in Rabat, forward Oluebube Umejiaku collected the adidas Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player. She scored the decisive second goal early in the second half, after Awawu Bashiru’s opener, and was named player of the match. North Korea’s Yu Jong-hyang took the Silver Ball and Japan’s Fuki Ito the Bronze Ball; the Golden Boot went to Maddie DiMaria of the United States.
President Bola Tinubu, in a statement issued through his adviser Bayo Onanuga, said the girls had “written your names in gold” and singled out both scorers. He also praised the coaching crew, the NFF and the National Sports Commission, and repeated a pledge to invest in grassroots sport, especially for girls. First Lady Oluremi Tinubu sent her own congratulations.
Why it matters
Nigeria is now the first African country to win both the boys’ and girls’ U-17 World Cups, and the first team ever to lift this trophy after losing its opening game. The question now is whether the promised support turns into structured pathways, so this generation does not fade before senior level. 2. Premier League: Arsenal six clear, Leeds stop Spurs
What happened
Martin Odegaard’s 72nd-minute goal gave champions Arsenal a hard-earned 1-0 home win over Hull, their ninth win in ten league games. With Manchester City losing 3-1 at Nottingham Forest later in the day, Arsenal head into the break six points clear. Earlier, substitute Noah Okafor scored within two minutes of coming on to give Leeds a 1-0 win over Tottenham, ending Spurs’ three-match winning run in a game that also had a disputed VAR decision on a first-half challenge. At Craven Cottage, Rodrigo Muniz cancelled out Jacob Murphy’s long-range strike as Fulham drew 1-1 with Newcastle.
Why it matters
Super Eagles regulars Ola Aina (Forest) and Fulham pair Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey were all on the Saturday card before reporting for international duty, so Nigerian fans had reason to watch every one of these games. Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United play today. Need a legal way to watch? See how to watch the Premier League in Nigeria.

3. Sadiq starts but Real Madrid run riot in Valencia
What happened
Umar Sadiq, last week’s match-winner against Elche, led the line for Valencia at Mestalla but was replaced just before the hour as Real Madrid won 3-0. Federico Valverde and Arda Guler scored before the break and Kylian Mbappe added the third, with Valencia captain Jose Gaya sent off late on. Elsewhere, Bayern Munich won 2-1 at Mainz, Roma beat Sassuolo 3-0 and Paris Saint-Germain stayed top in France with a 1-0 win over Troyes.
Why it matters
Sadiq was not in Eric Chelle’s 24-man list for the Tanzania games, and a quiet night against Madrid does little to change that. Tonight’s big one for Nigerians is Atletico Madrid v Barcelona, with Ademola Lookman hoping to start.

4. NPFL: Rangers can pull away today
What happened
Matchday 12 continues today and Monday with eight fixtures. Leaders Rangers International host Kwara United in Enugu, knowing Kano Pillars are now only two points behind after their 1-1 draw with Kun Khalifat in Owerri. Other Sunday games include Abia Warriors v Doma United, Ranchers Bees v Enyimba and Warri Wolves v Katsina United. Sporting Lagos v Rivers United, set for the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, has been postponed.
Why it matters
Rangers also have games in hand, so a home win would give them a real cushion at the top. Follow every result on our NPFL table page.

5. Formula 1: Norris on pole in rain-hit Sao Paulo
What happened
Lando Norris took pole for today’s Sao Paulo Grand Prix after a qualifying session at Interlagos that was red-flagged by heavy rain and delayed for about 80 minutes. George Russell was second fastest but drops five places for an engine penalty, so newly crowned world champion Kimi Antonelli starts alongside Norris. Charles Leclerc qualified fourth but takes a ten-place penalty, while Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton start from the back. Liam Lawson moves up to third.
Why it matters
With the title already settled, this is about pride and the constructors’ table. More rain is forecast for the 71-lap race, which starts at 17:00 GMT (6pm in Lagos).

6. Tennis: Alcaraz and Shelton meet for the Paris title
What happened
Carlos Alcaraz beat Casper Ruud 6-4, 6-4 without facing a break point to reach his first Paris Masters final. He meets Ben Shelton, who came from a set down to beat French world No. 47 Luca Van Assche 5-7, 6-3, 6-4. It is a rematch of their US Open quarter-final, which Shelton won in a fifth-set tie-break.
Why it matters
Paris will have a first-time champion, and the result shapes the seedings for the ATP Finals in Turin later this month. The final starts at 15:00 Paris time (3pm in Lagos, 2pm in London).
