Last updated: 13 October 2026. This is a news explainer and the situation can change quickly. We could not find reports of a nationwide ASUU strike in progress as of the latest items we reviewed (September 2026), but check official ASUU and university announcements. We replaced an earlier, outdated version.
Few things disrupt Nigerian students’ plans like a university strike. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has gone on strike many times over pay and funding, and 2026 has been another tense year. Here is where things stand and why.

The 2026 agreement
After nearly 16 years of stalemate over the 2009 agreement, the federal government and ASUU signed a renegotiated agreement on 14 January 2026. The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, said the government had approved a 40% increase in the Consolidated Academic Allowance for ASUU members, effective 1 January 2026, and that implementation began in February. It followed a two-week warning strike that ASUU started on 13 October 2025 and suspended on 22 October, after the government returned to the negotiating table.
Why tension returned
- Salary delays: from the start of February 2026, lecturers at federal universities reported delays. ASUU president Christopher Piwuna said part of the problem was the late passage of the 2026 budget, which was needed to put the new salary structure fully in place. At the University of Jos, the local ASUU branch declared an indefinite strike over delayed March salaries and unpaid earned academic allowances, then called it off after meetings with management.
- Funding for the increase: in August 2026 an ASUU branch chair at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, said universities were paying the 40% increase but that the government had only partly reimbursed them, and she predicted a national strike by early September if nothing changed.
- Selective implementation: at a National Executive Council meeting in Jalingo in early September 2026, ASUU warned the government to honour its agreements or face another nationwide strike, saying some non-monetary parts of the deal had progressed but salaries and conditions of service had not. It also said the government had misrepresented the negotiations.
- Branch disputes: some branches, such as at the Federal University of Agriculture, Zuru, issued ultimatums over unpaid allowances and arrears.
The government says it has met its obligations and has directed universities to comply, while ASUU says there is a lack of political will rather than a lack of funds. We have not independently verified either side’s figures.

A short history of ASUU strikes
- 2010: an indefinite strike over the 2009 agreement lasted more than five months.
- 2011: a 59-day strike over the same issues.
- 2014: a one-week warning strike.
- October 2025: a two-week warning strike.
Strikes also occurred in other years not listed here, and each time the pattern was similar: an agreement, slow implementation, ultimatums, a strike and a suspension.
What it means for students
A strike can delay exams, graduation, NYSC mobilisation and job starts. Public universities are the main affected group, though private universities are not. Students often feel they have little control, but there are things you can do:
- Follow official channels such as your university and department notices, and treat unsigned WhatsApp messages as rumours. See our guides on spotting fake news and verifying news.
- Keep learning. Use the time for revision, projects, languages or skills. See our guide on skills in demand and digital skills.
- Plan your money for rent, food and transport if the break stretches. See our guides on saving money and the cost of living.
- Consider short-term work or training, but beware of scams. See internet scams.

What parents can do
- Keep communication open with your children, and help them plan their time.
- Check the university’s academic calendar and fees policy.
- Avoid paying unofficial intermediaries for “fast-track” services.
What to watch next
- Whether salary arrears and the funding for the 40% increase are paid.
- ASUU NEC decisions and ultimatum deadlines.
- Government statements from the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance.
- Statements by other unions, since similar disputes occur in polytechnics and colleges of education.
