1. Flamingos are world champions
What happened
Nigeria’s U-17 women beat Japan 2-1 in the final of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat on Saturday evening. Awawu Bashiru opened the scoring in the 39th minute when her long-range shot slipped through the Japanese goalkeeper’s hands. Oluebube Umejiaku doubled the lead two minutes after the restart, set up by Esther Stephen. Fuki Ito pulled one back for Japan, the 2014 champions, on 80 minutes, but Hakeem Busari’s side held on.
The Flamingos lost their opening game to Poland, then won six in a row, including victories over defending champions North Korea and Brazil (3-1 in the semi-final). North Korea took bronze by beating Brazil 6-0 earlier in the day.
Why it matters
It is the first time an African team has won this tournament, and it beats Nigeria’s previous best of bronze in 2022. Nigeria already has five U-17 boys’ world titles. Read our full report: Flamingos beat Japan 2-1.

What happened
The Nigeria Football Federation released Eric Chelle’s 24-man list for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Tanzania: in Uyo on Friday 13 November and away on Tuesday 17 November. Goalkeeper Maduka Okoye, striker Kelechi Iheanacho (17 league goals in 14 games for Bursaspor) and midfielders Raphael Onyedika and Frank Onyeka are not included. Slavia Prague teenager Suleiman Mubarak gets a first senior call-up, while Tochukwu Nnadi, Yusuf Alhassan and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru return. Tolu Arokodare, Taiwo Awoniyi, Akor Adams and Ademola Lookman lead the attack.

Nottingham Forest beat Manchester City 3-1 at the City Ground. Jair Cunha scored after six minutes and Liam Delap added two, either side of a Rayan Cherki strike for City, who have now lost three league games in a row. Earlier, Martin Odegaard’s goal gave leaders Arsenal a 1-0 win over Hull, and substitute Noah Okafor’s late strike earned Leeds a 1-0 win over Tottenham. At Craven Cottage, Fulham drew 1-1 with Newcastle; Super Eagles pair Calvin Bassey and Alex Iwobi both started for Fulham, and Rodrigo Muniz equalised three minutes after Jacob Murphy’s opener.

5. Bundesliga: late drama for Onyedika’s Frankfurt
What happened
Raphael Onyedika started for Eintracht Frankfurt and played until the 85th minute as they drew 2-2 at Paderborn, with Jonathan Burkardt equalising in stoppage time. Bayern Munich won 2-1 at Mainz and Borussia Dortmund beat Elversberg 2-1, so the top two stay level on points.
Why it matters
Onyedika is a regular in Germany, which makes his omission from the Super Eagles list one of the talking points of the day.
