WAEC Date of Birth Change: What Is Allowed and What to Do Instead (2026)

Last updated: 15 October 2026 · By Naijatipsland Editorial Team · Editorial policy

If the date of birth on your WAEC result or certificate is wrong, the first thing to know is uncomfortable: WAEC has said for years that it does not accept requests to amend a date of birth once results are out. Many websites and agents still promise a “WAEC date of birth change” for a fee, and some of those promises are scams. This guide explains what WAEC has actually said, what you can still do, and how to fix the problem in the places where it hurts most: admission, NYSC, jobs and your NIN.

Rules in this area change, and we could not find a current official WAEC page that spells out every case. Where sources disagree, we say so. Always confirm with WAEC through its official channels before you pay or travel.

Quick answer

  • Date of birth: WAEC said in 2016 that from 1 January 2017 it would stop correcting date of birth and other entries on certificates, to curb malpractice. In September 2023 it repeated that it “does not entertain requests for date of birth amendment”.
  • Name: name corrections have been reported as possible, with documents and a fee. Daily Trust reported ₦10,000 in 2023, but another guide gave different amounts. Confirm before paying.
  • Price lists are fake: a viral WAEC “price list” that charged ₦70,000 for a name or date of birth correction was declared fake by WAEC in 2023.
  • What most people do: keep the WAEC result as it is, prove the true date of birth with a court affidavit and the birth record, and make sure NIN, JAMB, school and NYSC records are consistent.
What WAEC will and will not correct on a certificate

What WAEC has said about date of birth changes

Africa Check reported that in April 2016 WAEC announced it would stop correcting errors in date of birth and other entries from 1 January 2017. On 26 September 2023, after a fake price list went viral, WAEC wrote on its official X account: “The Council still does not entertain requests for date of birth amendment.” Daily Trust, which fact-checked the same list in October 2023, quoted WAEC’s earlier press release, which complained about “the volume of requests for amendments by candidates” and advised anyone with an error to obtain an affidavit from a court.

The practical meaning: after your result is released, you should not expect WAEC to reprint your certificate with a different date of birth. Requests made before the effective date were to be treated on merit, but that window closed years ago.

Why some websites say otherwise

Several guides describe a full correction process at a WAEC state office, with a letter, an affidavit, six passport photographs, your original certificate and a fee of about ₦10,000. For example, a Sidmach guide first published in 2021 and updated in 2025 describes this process. Other older posts list ₦10,000 for a name or date of birth correction and ₦15,000 for both, with a wait of three to six months. These guides are not official WAEC pages, they contradict WAEC’s own statements on date of birth, and they disagree with each other on fees. Treat them as unverified. If you decide to try it, go to a WAEC office yourself, ask them in person what they will accept, and pay only at the office or through WAEC’s official payment channel.

Check your data before results come out

The only reliable way to avoid a wrong date of birth is to catch it at registration. Daily Trust reported that candidates can confirm their date of birth entries through a secondary opportunity on the registration portal before results. School candidates should check their registration data with the school, and private candidates should check their own registration slip, character by character. Compare it with your birth certificate and your NIN slip, and report any difference immediately.

What to do if your WAEC date of birth is already wrong

  1. Compare your records. Put your WAEC result or certificate, birth certificate, NIN slip and JAMB slip side by side. Note exactly which one differs and by how much.
  2. Raise it with WAEC in writing. Use WAEC’s official support channels, or visit a WAEC office with your documents. Readers’ comments on WAEC’s own blog point to portal.waec.org/enquiry/tickets and support@waec.org for certificate mismatches. WAEC may tell you it cannot change the date, but you will have a record of your request.
  3. Get a court affidavit and a birth record. A sworn affidavit from a court stating your correct date of birth is the document WAEC itself has advised. Pair it with your birth certificate. If you have no birth certificate, register the birth with the National Population Commission, which you will need anyway for NIN corrections.
  4. Fix your NIN if it is the wrong one. WAEC’s own blog (May 2024) explained that its Digital Certificate Platform checks your identity against documents such as your NIN, and that access depends on accurate identity details. If your NIN carries the wrong date, correct it through NIMC.
  5. Carry the paperwork. Keep the affidavit, birth certificate and NIN slip with your certificate when you apply for admission, NYSC mobilisation, a job or a passport.

Correcting your NIN date of birth

According to the WAEC blog post on correcting NIN errors, the NIMC self-service portal handles corrections. For a date of birth correction, the post said you must first register the new date with the National Population Commission, using a sworn affidavit to complete the birth certificate registration. It listed a fee of ₦16,340 for date of birth and ₦1,522.50 each for name, address and phone corrections. The post is from May 2024, so these fees may have changed. Confirm them on the NIMC portal before you pay.

This matters more now. On 14 July 2026, a report said the federal government had directed that WAEC, NECO and NABTEB certificates carry the holder’s NIN, date of birth and a recent photograph. The effective date was not stated in the report we reviewed, but the direction means that mismatched dates between your NIN and your exam records are likely to cause more problems, not fewer.

Where a wrong date of birth causes trouble

  • Admission: schools compare your WAEC date with your JAMB profile and birth certificate. Our guide to university admission in Nigeria 2026/27 covers the documents you need, and your JAMB result slip also carries your details, so read how to reprint your JAMB result slip and check it.
  • NYSC: mobilisation uses your certificate details and age. If the dates do not match, expect to present an affidavit and your birth record. Check the current NYSC procedure on its official portal.
  • Jobs and visas: employers and embassies check certificates against your passport and ID.
  • Digital certificate access: mismatches between your NIN and your WAEC profile can block access to your digital certificate.

Scams to avoid

  • “WAEC officials” who can change your date for ₦70,000 or more. The viral list with that figure was declared fake by WAEC. A paid “insider” change is also a route to a forged certificate, which is a criminal offence.
  • Touts at WAEC offices. Pay only through official channels and keep receipts.
  • Look-alike websites. Use WAEC’s official website and its official social media accounts to verify announcements.
  • Do not alter documents. Editing the date on a certificate or result slip yourself is fraud and can disqualify you permanently.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change my date of birth on my WAEC certificate?

WAEC has said since 2017, and again in 2023, that it does not entertain date of birth amendment requests after results are released. Some online guides describe a correction process, but those are not official, and you should ask WAEC directly.

Can WAEC correct my name?

Name corrections have been reported as possible with supporting documents and a fee. Daily Trust reported ₦10,000 in 2023. Ask WAEC for the current requirements.

Is a court affidavit enough?

An affidavit is the document WAEC has advised for a wrong date of birth. It does not change the certificate, but institutions commonly accept it with your birth certificate. Ask the institution you are dealing with what it requires.

My NIN date of birth is different from my WAEC date. What now?

Decide which date is true, and prove it with your birth record. Correct the wrong record, and keep the affidavit. WAEC’s digital certificate access depends on matching identity details.

Is the ₦70,000 WAEC correction list real?

No. WAEC said the list did not come from the council, and Daily Trust rated it false.

How long does a WAEC correction take?

We found no reliable official timeline. An old guide claimed three to six months for name corrections. Treat that as unverified.

Bottom line

Do not expect WAEC to change your date of birth after results, and do not pay anyone who says they can. Compare all your records, prove the true date with a court affidavit and a birth record, fix your NIN if it is wrong, and carry the paperwork wherever your certificate is checked.
