Key numbers in Nigeria news on 7 November 2026

1. ADC crisis: appeal filed, rival forum threatens protest

What happened

Less than 24 hours after Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court, Abuja, voided the David Mark-led leadership of the African Democratic Congress and the nominations it produced, including Atiku Abubakar’s presidential ticket, the party filed a notice of appeal and a motion for a stay of execution, both dated 6 November. Its lawyers wrote to INEC asking the commission not to act on the judgment until the appeal is decided. On the other side, the ADC National Executive Committee Chairmen Forum, which backs Nafiu Bala Gombe, asked INEC to replace Mark’s team on its portal, reopen nominations for fresh primaries, and warned of nationwide protests if it does not. Atiku said in a statement that he will stay in the race. The APC, through its spokesman Felix Morka, told the ADC to settle its internal crisis and denied any role in the case.

Why it matters

Until a higher court rules, there is real uncertainty over who the ADC’s candidates are. INEC’s next step, and how fast the Court of Appeal moves, could decide whether millions of voters see the ADC’s current ticket on the ballot on 16 January.

2. Campaign trail: Tinubu heads to Port Harcourt; sharp words from all sides

What happened

President Tinubu is due in Port Harcourt today for his third APC rally since the campaign began in Kaduna. FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, who inspected the 40,000-seat Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium on Friday, said he expects more than 70,000 people. At Friday’s rally in Uyo, Tinubu approved the long-requested Ibom Deep Sea Port and attacked NDC candidate Peter Obi’s record on erosion as Anambra governor, while Vice-President Shettima challenged Atiku’s record. APC chairman Nentawe Yilwatda said the party does not need to rig to win. From the opposition, Atiku dared Tinubu to meet him in a free and fair contest, and ADC running mate Rotimi Amaechi said he would resign if Nigerians saw no improvement within a year of an ADC government. Obi had earlier questioned the President’s travel pattern; his campaign had not replied to the Uyo remarks by the time of writing.

Why it matters

The campaign has moved from rallies to personal record-versus-record attacks. Voters will hear many claims; it is worth checking each one against the facts. Our 2027 election hub tracks the candidates and parties.

3. Monitors and opposition: billboards, violence and the voters’ register

What happened

The Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room listed presidential billboard permit fees as high as ₦200 million in Abia and ₦150 million in Enugu, Kogi and Cross River, far above normal rentals, and called for fair access for all candidates. It cited CLEEN Foundation figures of 70 election-related violent incidents in 19 states and the FCT this year, with 27 deaths, and asked INEC to publish a report on cleaning the preliminary register, now above 103 million names, before certification on 15 December. Separately, the six-party Coalition for Democracy (formerly the G100) demanded an independent forensic audit of the register by 15 December, citing alleged AI-generated photos and the removal of more than 1.27 million records. These are allegations; INEC had not publicly responded to the coalition’s claims in the reports we saw, and the APC has denied attacking opposition supporters in incidents reported this week.

4. EFCC: ₦1.233 trillion recovered in 34 months

What happened

EFCC spokesman Dele Oyewale told a joint security press briefing in Abuja that the commission recovered more than ₦1.233 trillion, plus foreign currency, and secured 10,872 convictions between October 2023 and July 2026 under chairman Ola Olukoyede. He said the agency is doing background work on possible illicit funding ahead of the 2027 elections but gave no details.

Why it matters

Recovered funds can return to public use, and the EFCC’s attention to campaign money and vote buying will be tested in the next ten weeks.

5. Security: Abia arrests, Ogun-Oyo abduction

Abia police scorecard

Abia Commissioner of Police Wilfred Afolabi said suspects linked to the 17 October attack on the Uratta divisional headquarters in Aba, in which two officers died, have been arrested. Between 11 September and 6 November the command arrested 109 suspects over 211 cases, rescued 10 stolen children and recovered 15 firearms and 30 vehicles.

Ten travellers taken at Ijebu Awa

Families say 10 bus passengers, including a young man who just finished NYSC service, were abducted on Tuesday evening at Ijebu Awa on the Ogun-Oyo boundary, with N25 million demanded. Ogun police said none of the victims was a serving corps member and that investigations and searches are ongoing.

Why it matters

Highway kidnappings are spreading into the South-West. If you travel by road, move in daylight and share your route with family.

6. Benue: four dead after suspected poisonous herbal mixture

What happened

At least four people died and about 14 were treated in hospital, some in critical condition, after taking a herbal preparation bought at a market in Oju, Benue State. Three sellers were held by local youth groups and handed to police; the case is now with the state command. Oju council chairman Jackson Ominyi confirmed the incident but said the exact death toll was still being established. In a separate event on Friday, NAFDAC warned patent medicine dealers in Imo against selling fake and expired drugs.

Why it matters

Unregistered remedies sold in markets can be deadly. Buy medicines only from licensed outlets, check for a NAFDAC number, and see a health worker if you feel unwell after taking any product.
