Two top Chelsea stars that don’t seem to have a place in Xabi Alonso’s 3-4-3 system
Xabi Alonso’s arrival at Chelsea has brought a significant tactical transformation, with the Spanish manager favouring a 3-4-3 formation. While some players have benefited from the new system, others appear to be struggling to find their ideal roles.
Two players who seem particularly affected by Alonso’s tactical approach Estevao Willian and Reece James.
1. Estevao Willian
Estevao Willian is one Chelsea star whose qualities do not appear perfectly suited to Alonso’s preferred system.
The Brazilian youngster thrives as a traditional right winger, where his dribbling, pace and creativity allow him to take on defenders and create goalscoring opportunities.
However, Alonso’s 3-4-3 system relies heavily on wing-backs for width, while the attacking positions behind the striker are often occupied by Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers.
This leaves Estevao facing a difficult challenge to secure regular playing time, despite being one of Chelsea’s most exciting young talents.
Except injury to any of the forwards, Estevao will continue to be in the shadows.
2. Reece James
Chelsea captain Reece James is undoubtedly one of the most talented players in the squad, but Alonso’s system has raised questions about his best position.
The England international is naturally a right-back or right wing-back, but Alonso has increasingly deployed him in central midfield.
Although James possesses the technical ability to operate in midfield, it is debatable whether the position brings out his best qualities. With Moises Caicedo, Jordan Henderson and Romeo Lavia also competing for midfield places, James could struggle to establish a clearly defined role in Alonso’s strongest starting XI.
One is Gusto; an other is Fofana … The third is on loan and won’t come back sooner!
So when injury comes whom will you play? Think!
