Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli became Chelsea’s youngest-ever Premier League player last week when he came off the bench in the west London derby against Brentford. The Academy midfielder was 16 years and 255 days old at the time, making him the second 16-year-old to make his senior debut for the Blues already this season.
Nicoll-Jazuli and fellow Academy midfielder Reggie Watson were both involved in Xabi Alonso’s pre-season plans before being handed their competitive debuts in recent weeks. They become the eighth and ninth 16-year-olds to appear for Chelsea’s first team in competitive matches.

Ian Hamilton – 16 years 138 days
Still the club’s youngest-ever player. The junior was handed his senior debut in a league game against Tottenham at White Hart Lane in March 1967 and headed Chelsea’s goal in a 1-1 draw. It was the first of five appearances he made for the Blues.
Kingsley Whiffen – 16 years 157 days
The Welsh goalkeeper was brought into the side for the final league fixture of the 1966/67 season as manager Tommy Docherty rested Peter Bonetti ahead of the FA Cup final. It proved to be Whiffen’s only Chelsea appearance.
Reggie Walsh – 16 years 193 days
The Academy midfielder was a regular in Chelsea’s UEFA Conference League squads during the 2024/25 season and made his debut from the bench in the 88th minute of the win away to Djurgården.
Reggie Watson – 16 years 226 days
Watson’s debut came from the start as he played the first half of Chelsea’s Carabao Cup third-round meeting with Leeds United at Stamford Bridge. The Blues fought back from 2-0 down to win a thrilling tie 6-3.
Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli – 16 years 255 days
The young midfielder’s debut arrived last Friday when he replaced Valentin Barco late on in the Premier League trip to Brentford.
Tommy Langley – 16 years 274 days
A boyhood Chelsea fan, Langley made his debut in November 1974 and went on to make the most appearances of anyone on this list, playing 152 times and scoring 43 goals over six seasons.
Michael Woods – 16 years 275 days
Woods made his debut as a substitute in a big FA Cup win over Macclesfield in January 2007. He featured once more in that competition before leaving the club in 2011.
John Sparrow – 16 years 283 days
Sparrow broke through during the 1973/74 season and played for Chelsea across six different campaigns, scoring twice in 74 appearances before joining Exeter City in 1981.
Michael Harrison – 16 years 360 days
Harrison debuted against Blackpool in April 1957, shortly before turning 17. The left winger went on to make 64 appearances for the club before joining Blackburn Rovers in 1962.
The continued emergence of Academy talents under Xabi Alonso underlines Chelsea’s long tradition of giving opportunities to highly rated teenagers.
