Shorunmu replaces Amapakabo as Abia Warriors coach

Nigeria Premier Football League side Abia Warriors have suspended technical adviser Imama Amapakabo and chief coach Bethel Oji over alleged acts of insubordination, with former Super Eagles goalkeeper Ike Shorunmu immediately placed in temporary charge of the club, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The decision was contained in an official letter dated May 11, 2026 and signed by club chairman John Sam Obuh obtained by our correspondent.

The letter revealed that both coaches had been suspended from all football-related duties pending further investigations.

“Abia Warriors have suspended Imama Amapakabo and Bethel Oji from all club activities with immediate effect over alleged acts of insubordination,” the letter stated.

It further disclosed that Shorunmu had already been instructed to assume responsibility for the team alongside his backroom staff.

“Ike Shorunmu and his assistants have been directed to immediately take charge of the team’s operations until further notice.”

The suspension reportedly followed incidents during Abia Warriors’ FA Cup semi-final clash against Ahudiyannem FC and their NPFL home defeat to Kun Khalifat.

Club management accused the coaching crew of disregarding directives and advice concerning team selection and tactical adjustments during both matches.

According to the club, the alleged refusal to comply with instructions contributed to disappointing defeats that brought embarrassment to both the club and Abia State.

Abia Warriors also confirmed that investigations into the incidents are ongoing, while the suspended officials have been instructed to cooperate fully with the investigative panel whenever invited.

Shorunmu, who enjoyed a distinguished career with the Super Eagles and previously worked with Nigeria’s national teams as a goalkeeping coach, now faces the task of stabilising the club during a difficult period.

The development comes at a crucial stage of the NPFL season, with Abia Warriors’ hope of a return to continental competition ultimately ended and their final game of the season against Warri Wolves being a formality.
