Romano “personal terms agreed” looks for nothing as Chelsea transfer plans become clear

We were always told that this was going to be a quiet January for Chelsea.

Then, a couple of weeks ago, rumours about a potential massive bid for Rennes’ Jeremy Jacquet appeared. Fabrizio Romano went as far as to say we had agreed personal terms with the 20 year old talent. However, clearly the price tag was too high, and we moved on.

Chelsea set to add nothing but recalls in January window

Aaron Anselmino looks sad after his recall from Dortmund.

Now, however, with just a week left in the window, it looks increasingly like those early predictions were true. The recalls and loan shuffling are going to be all we get in terms of squad tweaking at Stamford Bridge.

Right now it looks like the recall of Aaron Anselmino was to add him to the main group rather than to send him anywhere else. The much mooted ideas of accelerating the summer deals for Emmanuel Emegha and Mamadou Sarr from Strasbourg for this month also now look like they won’t be coming true.

There is enough quality and depth in this squad to survive without additions, especially if either Dario Essugo or Romeo Lavia can get fit and stay fit for the rest of the season. But the idea that an injection of fresh blood might lift things now no longer looks realistic.

In other news…

Even at more than £100m, Moises Caicedo has proved to be a great signing for Chelsea. It should be no surprise that the Blues are watching another player with a similar profile and background to the Ecuador star.

Pedro Neto’s place as a regular starter must be under threat now – he had a really ineffective game on Sunday and continues to struggle to show why he should be playing ahead of other options. His duel stats made for ugly reading.
