The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has inspected 23 police barracks across Nigeria as part of efforts to assess the living conditions of police officers and their families.
The inspection covered residential quarters and other welfare facilities within the barracks.
Disu also interacted with officers and residents to identify infrastructure problems and areas that need urgent attention.
The exercise was aimed at identifying major welfare challenges facing police personnel and determining areas that require rehabilitation and further investment.
The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday.
According to the statement, the inspection will help the police improve its response to the welfare and infrastructure needs of its personnel.
The statement quoted Disu as saying that decent accommodation and functional welfare infrastructure were essential to boosting the morale and effectiveness of police personnel.
The IG assured officers that identified welfare needs would receive appropriate attention, stressing that personnel who dedicate themselves to protecting lives and property deserved conducive living conditions.
He said, “Personnel who dedicate themselves to the protection of lives and property deserve decent and conducive living conditions.”
Disu added that improved welfare remained an important component of the ongoing police reform efforts and was integral to building “a motivated, professional and effective Police Force.”
According to the statement, the inspection also underscored the Force leadership’s emphasis on evidence-based assessment and practical interventions to address infrastructure deficiencies across police barracks.
The police said the initiative would strengthen welfare support systems and improve the living environment of officers and their families through sustained investment in accommodation and other welfare infrastructure.
The Force reiterated its commitment to improving the wellbeing of its personnel while strengthening their capacity to effectively discharge their constitutional responsibilities.
