Dr Lawan Ahmad Muhammad Sani has emerged as the 17th Emir of Gumel, following his appointment by the Jigawa State Government.
The appointment was approved by Governor Umar Namadi after the recommendation of the Gumel Emirate Council Kingmakers and the Jigawa State Council of Chiefs.
Mr Lawan, who previously held the traditional title of Chiroman Gumel, succeeds his father, Dr Ahmed Muhammad Sani II, the 16th Emir of Gumel, who died on Thursday, September 3, 2026, after a reign of nearly 46 years.
The new emir’s emergence brings to an end the succession process following the death of the late monarch and ushers in a new phase in the history of the ancient Gumel Emirate.
The kingmakers were chaired by the Wazirin Gumel, Adamu Muhammad Nasoro, while the Emirs of Hadejia, Kazaure, Ringim and Dutse participated in the process in their capacity as members of the Jigawa State Council of Chiefs.
The appointment reflects the outcome of the traditional selection process, which was subsequently approved by the state government in accordance with the established procedures governing the succession to the Gumel Emirate throne.
Before his emergence as emir, Dr Lawan served as Director of Cybersecurity at the National Information Technology Development Agency, NITDA, where he was involved in the development and implementation of cybersecurity initiatives.
His background combines traditional royal heritage with modern education, technology and public service, a profile that is expected to shape his approach to the administration of the emirate.
His appointment also marks a generational transition in the leadership of the Gumel traditional institution, coming after the exceptionally long reign of his father.
The late Emir, Dr Ahmed Muhammad Sani II, ascended the throne in 1980 and remained on the throne for nearly five decades, making his reign one of the longest in the history of the emirate.
During the period, the Gumel Emirate remained an important traditional institution in Jigawa State, with the emirate playing a significant role in maintaining cultural heritage, community cohesion and traditional leadership.
With the emergence of Dr Lawan, attention is expected to shift to the new monarch’s vision for the emirate and his ability to combine the responsibilities of traditional leadership with contemporary demands for development, education, technology and social cohesion.
The Jigawa State Government congratulated the new emir on his appointment, expressing confidence that his reign would contribute to peace, unity and development across the Gumel Emirate.
The government also conveyed its expectation that the new monarch would build on the legacy of his predecessor while providing effective traditional leadership to the people of the emirate.
For the Gumel Emirate, Dr Lawan’s emergence represents both continuity and transition: continuity through his succession to his father and transition as the ancient institution moves from a nearly five-decade reign into a new era under a monarch with a background in technology and public service.
