SDP Honours Late Sen. Akwashiki In Lafia

By Sunday John

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) on Thursday observed a moment of silence in honour of the late Sen. Godiya Akwashiki, who died penultimate week at an Indian hospital at the age of 52.

Until his death, Akwashiki represented Nasarawa North Senatorial District in the 10th Senate on the platform of the SDP.

Born in Angba Iggah, Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, the late senator was first elected to the Senate in 2019 and re-elected in 2023.

He previously served in the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, where he rose to Majority Leader and later Deputy Speaker.

During his legislative career, Akwashiki chaired the Senate Committee on Air Force and Inter-Parliamentary Affairs and served as Vice Chairman of the Committee on Media and Public Affairs.

At an evening of tributes organised in Lafia by the SDP National Working Committee (NWC), the party described Akwashiki as a symbol of integrity, selfless service and principled leadership.

Party leaders, traditional rulers and political stakeholders who attended the event reflected on his life, values and contributions to Nasarawa State and the nation.

In his remarks, SDP National Chairman, Prof. Sadiq Gombe, described the late senator as a “shining star,” whose death was a profound loss to his family, the party and Nigeria.

Gombe said Akwashiki lived a life defined by honour, compassion and the fear of God, earning respect across political, ethnic and religious divides.

He noted that the senator’s leadership was anchored on service, accountability and commitment to the welfare of his constituents.

According to Gombe, Akwashiki had, shortly before his death, expressed concern that his failing health might affect his capacity to serve and had considered stepping aside in the interest of quality representation.

He described the gesture as a rare demonstration of responsibility and patriotism.

Prayers were offered for the repose of his soul, with Gombe praying for Allah’s forgiveness and strength for the bereaved family.

“True leadership is measured by legacy, not titles or years. Senator Akwashiki’s legacy speaks for itself,” Gombe said.

Other speakers, including Sen. Suleiman Adokwe, Nasarawa Deputy Gov. Emmanuel Akabe, SDP leaders and traditional rulers, praised the late senator’s dedication to dialogue, integrity and grassroots development.

They recalled his execution of constituency projects across Nasarawa North, describing him as one of the most effective lawmakers produced by the state since 1999.

The programme ended with prayers for peace and progress in Nasarawa State and Nigeria. (NAN)
