Christmas Travel in Nigeria 2026: Bus, Flight and Train Fares by Route

Every December, millions of Nigerians travel home for Christmas and New Year, and every December the same complaint comes back: fares double or triple. In October 2026 searches, the cheapest one-way flight from Lagos to Port Harcourt in the peak period cost about N342,500, against about N117,000 in a normal week. Road and rail fares rise too, though by less.

This guide sets out what it costs to travel by bus, plane and train on Nigeria’s busiest Christmas routes, when prices peak, and practical ways to pay less. If you are in Lagos for the season, see also our Detty December 2026 guide.

Last updated: 19 October 2026. Fares change daily and depend on the operator, date and how early you book. Use these figures as a guide, not a quote.

The short answer

  • Flights: the peak period is roughly 15 December to 4 January. Cheapest one-way fares found in October searches ranged from about N128,000 (Enugu to Abuja) to N342,500 (Lagos to Port Harcourt and Abuja to Owerri) at peak.
  • Buses: before the rush, Lagos to Enugu costs about N32,000 to N60,000 one way and Lagos to Owerri about N33,000 to N51,000, depending on the company. Expect 20% to 50% more at Christmas.
  • Trains: Lagos to Ibadan and Abuja to Kaduna start at N3,600 in regular class. Last Christmas, the Federal Government cut train fares by 50% from 23 December to 4 January.
  • Best ways to save: travel before 14 December, book now, be flexible by a day or two, and return after 4 January.

Flight fares on Christmas routes

Domestic airfares are the most volatile part of Christmas travel. Data from the booking platform Flightpadi, based on more than 3,500 searches between 1 September and 9 October 2026 and reported by Legit.ng, shows how much prices jump in the peak period from 15 December to 4 January:

Nigeria domestic flight fares at Christmas 2026: normal week vs peak period, Lagos to Port Harcourt up to N342,500
Cheapest one-way economy fares found, normal week compared with the Christmas peak.
RouteNormal weekPeak (15 Dec to 4 Jan)
Lagos to Port HarcourtN117,000N342,500
Abuja to OwerriN104,000N342,500
Abuja to EnuguN105,500N325,000
Enugu to LagosN121,000N151,000
Port Harcourt to AbujaN117,000N139,000
Enugu to AbujaN117,000N128,000

The pattern is clear: flights into the South East and South South before Christmas are the most expensive, while flights in the opposite direction stay closer to normal prices. The same applies in reverse after New Year, when everyone heads back to Lagos and Abuja.

Dates make a big difference. In the same searches, Lagos to Enugu cost N104,000 on 11 December but N327,500 from 17 December, and one airline quoted N394,000 on the same date another quoted N327,500. Lagos to Abuja was N135,000 on 17 December against N284,500 on nearby dates.

For a normal-week benchmark, Lagos to Abuja one-way fares on 8 October 2026 started at about N101,500 (Enugu Air), with United Nigeria, Xejet, Ibom Air and ValueJet between about N105,500 and N123,500, according to Flightpadi.

Bus fares on Christmas routes

Road travel is still how most Nigerians go home for Christmas, especially to the South East. Operator price guides published between May and June 2026 put typical one-way fares at:

Nigeria interstate bus fares and NRC train fares before Christmas 2026: Lagos to Enugu, Owerri, Abuja; Lagos-Ibadan and Abuja-Kaduna trains
Typical bus and train fares before the Christmas rush.
RouteTypical fare (one way)Operators
Lagos to EnuguN32,000 to N60,000Peace Mass Transit, GUO, Chisco, Libra, ABC, GIGM
Lagos to OwerriN33,000 to N51,000GUO, Peace Mass Transit, Young Shall Grow, ABC
Lagos to AbujaN30,000 to N45,000Major interstate operators
Abuja to EnuguN20,000 to N35,000Major interstate operators
Abuja to KadunaN5,000 to N10,000Buses and shared cars
Port Harcourt to OwerriN4,000 to N8,000Buses and shared cars

Within each route, the cheapest and most expensive companies can differ by N15,000 or more, and luxury or executive buses cost more than standard ones. On Lagos to Enugu, for example, one price guide listed Peace Mass Transit from about N32,000 and GIGM and ABC at up to N60,000.

How much more at Christmas?

Bus operators usually raise fares in the weeks before Christmas. Industry price guides estimate increases of 20% to 50% in peak periods. In a previous Christmas season, Legit.ng found GUO’s Lagos to Enugu fare rising from N45,500 to N52,725 for a 10-seater bus, an increase of about 16%. Some informal operators charge much more on the busiest days, especially from 20 to 24 December. Cargo charges for bags of rice, drinks and gifts also go up.

Train fares

Train travel is the cheapest option where a line exists, though the network is limited. Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) fares listed on its website are:

RouteRegularBusinessFirst
Lagos to IbadanN3,600N6,500N13,000
Lagos to AbeokutaN3,000N4,500N9,000
Abeokuta to IbadanN2,000N3,000N6,000
Abuja to KadunaN3,600N6,500N9,000

NRC also runs narrow-gauge services on parts of the old network, with tickets sold at stations. For the 2025 festive season, the Federal Government approved a 50% cut in train fares nationwide from 23 December 2025 to 4 January 2026, and NRC reported several departures near full capacity. No discount had been announced for 2026 at the time of writing, but watch NRC’s official channels in December. Book standard-gauge tickets only on NRC-approved platforms, and be wary of anyone selling tickets on social media.

Bus or plane? A family budget example

For a family of four travelling from Lagos to Enugu and back, the choice of transport changes the total dramatically. Using the figures in this guide as a rough example:

  • By bus at a mid-range fare: about N40,000 per person each way before the rush. With a 30% Christmas increase, that becomes about N52,000, or roughly N416,000 for four people there and back, before cargo and local transport.
  • By plane in the peak: at about N327,500 per person one way, four people flying out on 17 December would pay about N1.31 million for the outbound journey alone.
  • By plane before the rush: at about N104,000 per person, flying out on 11 December would cost about N416,000 for four, the same as the bus return trip in the peak.

These are illustrations, not quotes, but they show why timing matters more than almost anything else. For many families, the cheapest plan is to travel early by air or to accept a longer road journey at a fixed, pre-booked fare.

When fares peak

  • Outbound peak: roughly 17 to 24 December, when people leave Lagos and Abuja for the South East, South South and other home states.
  • Return peak: roughly 1 to 4 January, when people head back to work and school.
  • Cheapest windows: early December (before about 14 December) and after the first week of January.

In 2026 there is an added factor: the presidential and National Assembly elections take place on 16 January 2027. Many people may want to be in the state where they are registered to vote, which could keep demand high into January. If you are registered, read our guide on checking if your PVC is ready and collect it while you are home.

How to pay less

How to pay less for Christmas travel in Nigeria: travel before 14 December, book early, flexible dates, return after 4 January, compare buses, train discounts
Six ways to cut the cost of Christmas travel.
  1. Travel before 14 December if you can. In October searches, flying Lagos to Enugu on 11 December cost about a third of the fare from 17 December.
  2. Book now. Fares rise as seats sell. If you find a price you can afford, take it.
  3. Be flexible by a day or two. Check dates either side of your plan; the saving can be tens of thousands of naira.
  4. Return after 4 January. The rush back peaks around New Year.
  5. Compare companies. For buses, check several operators’ websites or apps; for flights, compare airlines directly as well as through booking sites.
  6. Consider combining modes. For example, fly to a cheaper nearby airport and continue by road, or take the train for part of the journey where a line exists.

Staying safe on the road

December is one of the busiest and most dangerous times on Nigerian roads. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) usually runs a special festive patrol to deal with traffic and accidents.

  • Use registered transport companies with proper terminals and passenger manifests, rather than vehicles picked up at the roadside.
  • Travel by day where possible, and avoid routes with recent security incidents.
  • Do not pressure drivers to speed; report reckless driving to the FRSC.
  • Keep valuables out of sight and carry some cash for emergencies.
  • Share your trip details with family and keep your phone charged.
