Waddle Warns Salah Over Turkish League Challenge

Former Tottenham and England winger Chris Waddle has questioned whether Mohamed Salah can maintain his best form after making a surprise move to Turkish Süper Lig club Trabzonspor.

The 33-year-old Egypt international’s transfer to Turkey reportedly caught many observers off guard, with Saudi Arabia and Major League Soccer previously regarded as more likely destinations.

Waddle believes Salah could face significant pressure in Turkey, particularly because of the high expectations placed on marquee signings by passionate supporters.

Speaking to Snabbare, Waddle warned that Turkish fans can quickly turn against high-profile players if they fail to deliver immediately.

“Turkish fans turn on high-profile players quickly if early performances do not meet massive expectations,” he said.

The former England international also questioned how Salah will adapt to the physical demands of the Süper Lig, particularly as he enters the later stages of his career.

Salah has built much of his success on his pace, movement and ability to exploit space, but Waddle believes the Egyptian could face a different challenge in Turkey.

“It’ll be interesting to see how he copes because there are a few teams who are better than Trabzonspor, and it can be a hard league,” he said.

Waddle acknowledged the financial benefits of the move but remained cautious about what Salah can achieve on the pitch.

“He’s getting paid well, he’s in a league which is more competitive than a lot of people expected, and we’ll see how he fares,” he added.

The former Spurs star also stopped short of predicting immediate success for Trabzonspor, saying it remains to be seen whether Salah can help the club win a major trophy.

Despite his reservations, Waddle wished the Egyptian forward well as he begins a new chapter away from England.

Salah’s move to the Süper Lig represents a significant change after years of competing at the highest level of European football and will provide the veteran forward with a fresh challenge as he looks to prove he can still thrive in a different environment.
