The Cross River State Police Command has presented insurance benefit cheques worth N13.75 million to no fewer than 17 families of deceased officers who served in the state.
The cheques were presented to the beneficiaries by the State Commissioner of Police, Ajo Ordue, on Thursday at the Police Command Headquarters in Calabar, the state capital.
According to him, the payment was approved by the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, under the Nigeria Police Force Group Life Assurance Scheme.
The Commissioner said the gesture was intended to provide financial assistance to the bereaved families following the death of their loved ones in active service.
He said, “17 families of police officers who died while serving in Cross River State have received N13,753,885.36 in Group Life Assurance benefits. While no amount of money could replace a loved one, this gesture will provide meaningful support to the families left behind.
“The payment was approved by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu. The beneficiaries are officers who were covered under the Nigeria Police Force’s Group Life Assurance scheme. This initiative is to provide financial assistance to families following the death of their relatives in service.”
He noted that while the financial benefit could not compensate for the loss, it would provide some support and succour to the families left behind.
“It reflects the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to the welfare of its personnel and the families they leave behind in case of death,” Ordue said.
Describing the payment as a practical expression of the Force’s appreciation for the sacrifices of its fallen heroes, the CP acknowledged the sacrifices of the deceased officers and their families.
He urged the beneficiaries to make judicious use of the funds and assured them of the command’s continued support.
Ordue also called on serving officers to remain professional and dedicated in the discharge of their duties.
