Tottenham Hotspur can make a push to return to European football this season if they get a striker through the door before the 3 September transfer deadline.
That is according to former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes that the addition of a new frontman is the final piece of the jigsaw for the Lilywhites.
This comes after reports in recent days that Spurs have agreed a deal to sign Omar Marmoush from Manchester City, to provide further competition for Dominic Solanke.
Wyness believes that a new striker holds the key to a potential European push for Spurs, but also believes that Roberto De Zerbi’s side have enjoyed an excellent pre-season.
The new boss has used the transfer window to mould the group in his image, and has already transformed the squad from the unit that survived relegation last term.
Spurs’ season began with a heavy defeat against Brentford, but De Zerbi is still on the hunt for an attacking reinforcement.

Roberto De Zerbi ‘moulding’ Tottenham ‘spirit’
Everton’s former chief Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – revealed that he has “heard” that the Spurs players have really bought into De Zerbi’s methods during their summer preparations.
He believes that the Italian is building a genuine “spirit” behind the group, something that Spurs have regularly been accused of lacking in recent years.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness outlined that the early signs are positive in terms of the campaign that Tottenham could have.
“De Zerbi has got to be careful because we all know that too much change can be hard to meld together in the squad,” he said.
“But it does seem as though the training camps and all the whispers I’ve been hearing back are that the players are buying into him big time, he’s moulding a real spirit.
“Spurs could be one of those surprises from last season’s performances that could they be up there challenging in the European places. To be honest, if they can get the striker situation right I wouldn’t be surprised.”

Former Aston Villa chief executive Keith Wyness told Football Insider on Friday that goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez is still fully expected to leave before the end of the window.
This comes after Football Insider exclusively revealed earlier this week that Tottenham are lining up a move to sign the Argentine in the closing stages of the window.
Villa have already brought in Zion Suzuki to replace the 33-year-old as their number one, which has opened the door for Spurs to swoop in.
They had intended for Antonin Kinsky to begin the season as their starting option, but that plan could now change if they can land Martinez.
