Sources: Rangers to complete John Souttar transfer in defender double deal

Rangers are planning another move for a left-sided centre-back in a deal that is expected to trigger John Souttar’s exit, sources have told Football Insider.

The Light Blues have already added Ben Godfrey at the centre of their backline this summer, but they are now eyeing a left-footed option to bolster their options even further.

The Glasgow giants are now ready to cash in on Souttar, whose contract expires in the summer of 2027, and he has not travelled on the pre-season tour to Spain.

Sources say that the 29-year-old is on the radar of clubs in England, given that he does not feature at all in Derek McInnes’ plans for 2026-27.

The interested parties are hoping to land the Scotland international on a cut-price fee, and Rangers are aware that they cannot command a big fee for the defender.

Souttar turned out 24 times in the Scottish Premiership last term, but fell firmly out of favour under Danny Rohl in the final stages of the season.

John Souttar exit plan breaks Derek McInnes mould

McInnes is trying to mould the Rangers squad in his image this summer, and has already returned to Hearts for raids for Cammy Devlin and Lawrence Shankland.

The new boss is working to build a core of players with Scottish Premiership experience at Ibrox, a mould that Souttar firmly fits into.

The veteran has made over 275 appearances in the top flight since he debuted for Dundee United back in 2012-13, but is no longer valued at Rangers.

McInnes doesn’t fancy Souttar despite his vast experience, and is looking to head in a different direction after taking the reins.

It is also clear that the centre-back is free to leave Ibrox in the coming weeks, provided that the right club can be found to take him.

There is no shortage of interest in Souttar from south of the border at the moment, and the writing is on the wall for him in terms of his future at Ibrox.

Rangers step up pursuit of Norwegian starlet

Football Insider revealed last week that Rangers are ready to accelerate their interest in long-term target Jens Hjerto-Dahl, amid a spike in interest from several Turkish Super Lig clubs.

The Gers have had their eyes on the Tromso midfielder in several recent transfer windows, and have outlined him as a leading target this summer.

Reports in Norway have suggested that Rangers have already seen an opening bid rejected for the 20-year-old starlet, who is tipped to have a big future ahead of him.

Hjerto-Dahl has already notched six goals and two assists from just 13 games in the Eliteserien this season, while playing in the middle of the park.
