Sources: Chelsea make John Stones approach as contract demands revealed

Chelsea have registered their interest in Manchester City legend John Stones, sources have told Football Insider.

The Blues are exploring a permanent deal for the 32-year-old centre-back after he was released by the Manchester club at the end of the 2025-26 campaign.

The England international is believed to want a two or three-year contract that reflects his status as a World Cup star.

Stones has been heavily linked with a number of teams around Europe and in the Premier League this summer, but the Blues are now looking to win the race for his signature.

The centre-back had a difficult final season at City despite winning both the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup, with injuries limiting his appearances to just 18 in all competitions.

However, the former Everton star still managed to flourish for England at the 2026 World Cup and further enhanced his reputation as the country’s outstanding defender of the modern era.

Is John Stones still good?

After spending so long on the sidelines last season, questions will be asked about whether Stones is good enough to make an impact at Chelsea.

The centre-back was once one of the best defenders in the Premier League, but it is now clear he is reaching the end of his career.

However, at the 2026 World Cup, Stones proved that he is still capable of performing against the best.

According to Fotmob on 22 July, he averaged a 96.8 per cent passing completion, 2.18 accurate long balls, 0.27 chances created, 1.91 aerial duels won, 2.18 recoveries and 5.45 clearances per 90 minutes.

Therefore, if he can continue this form, if Chelsea do elect to sign him this summer, there is every chance that he will be a success at Stamford Bridge.

Who else are Chelsea looking to sign?

Chelsea have also been heavily linked to Crystal Palace centre-back Maxence Lacroix in recent months.

The defender was vital to the Eagles winning yet another trophy last season as the club lifted the Conference League title.

Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider has now exclusively told Football Insider that Palace are set to demand £65m for Lacroix.

Arsenal are also showing interest in the defender, and it remains to be seen where he will be playing his football throughout the upcoming campaign.
