Saudi slashes Nigeria’s Hajj slots

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has reduced Nigeria’s Hajj allocation, leading to the exclusion of 456 intending pilgrims from Zamfara State for the 2026 pilgrimage.

The Chairman of the Zamfara State Hajj Commission, Alhaji Musa Mallaha, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Gusau on Wednesday.

According to him, the state’s quota was reduced from 2,207 to 1,741 pilgrims, following the adjustment by Saudi authorities.

“This affected 456 intending pilgrims from the state who may not be able to participate in this year’s exercise,” he said.

Mallaha noted that arrangements were underway to commence the airlifting of pilgrims from the Zamfara International Airport, adding that the state government remains committed to ensuring a smooth exercise.

He also announced improved welfare provisions for pilgrims, including the distribution of two large bags and one small bag, an upgrade from previous arrangements.

“This is part of efforts to improve pilgrims’ welfare and wellbeing,” he said.

Mallaha added that an enlightenment committee had been set up to educate intending pilgrims across all 14 local government areas on proper Hajj rites in line with Islamic teachings.

He said the committee is chaired by Sheikh Ahmad Kanoma, head of the Ulama Consultative Council, and has already begun sensitisation exercises ahead of the official flag-off of the pilgrimage.
