Rangers have agreed 'treble-your-money' signing – Finance expert

Rangers’ deal to sign striker Kevin Kelsy from Portland Timbers is a low-risk but potentially extremely high-reward signing.

That is according to former Manchester City financial advisor Stefan Borson, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes that the 22-year-old could be in line for a rapid rise in the coming years.

Rangers shelled out a fee of around £9.5million to sign the Venezuela international, who netted nine goals in 20 games in the MLS this season.

Borson believes that Kelsy has the potential to help the Glasgow giants “treble their money” in the coming years; such is the premium that strikers are being sold at in today’s transfer market.

The youngster debuted from the bench in Rangers’ 1-0 win over Motherwell on Saturday, but will be expected to become the main man at Ibrox.

Borson believes that the move to sign the frontman has plenty of “upside” and is not necessarily a risk in terms of finances.

Stefan Borson explains ‘worst-case’ Kevin Kelsy scenario

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson made it clear that even if Kelsy fails to impress in the Scottish Premiership, Rangers would likely make most of their money back on him.

“Well, it’s not a huge amount of money, and clearly if it works, it’s a striker, and we know that there’s a huge shortage of strikers,” he said.

“People are going to look at the SPL; he’s going to get noticed. He’s 22. It’s a treble-your-money type of deal if it works.

“Measuring it in terms of risk vs reward, you’d probably look at it and go well, what’s the maximum downside here if it fails? Presumably, one of the American teams would buy him back for at least £7m.

“You’ve got probably really limited downside, given his age, and your upside could be pretty significant and pretty fast if he works.

“I think it’s the sort of deal that makes a lot of sense. Whether he’s up to the standard is obviously very, very difficult to know.”

49ers’ Rangers takeover stance revealed after confirmed news

Former Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness told Football Insider earlier this week that Rangers’ 49ers ownership will not entertain any suggestions of the club being sold in the coming years.

This comes after businessman Neil Lal recently revealed that buying the Ibrox outfit is one of his long-term ambitions, while also pursuing a deal to buy Leicester City.

However, Wyness believes that Lal lacks the finances to be able to move for the Gers, and also feels that their current owners have no intention of relinquishing any control.

He feels that the 49ers are in it for the long haul in Govan, and it would take something pretty drastic for that stance to change any time soon.
