Premier League make announcement about controversial Newcastle incident vs Bournemouth

The Premier League have announced why Will Osula’s goal was allowed to stand as he equalised for Newcastle United against Bournemouth at St James’ Park.

Osula thought he had been denied his fourth league goal of the campaign as the offside flag went up after he raced through on goal and dispatched past Djordje Petrovic to score.

Newcastle were desperate for an equaliser against the Cherries in the latter stages of the game, and the goal was soon allowed to stand after a VAR check.

Osula has now scored two in as many league games to show why Eddie Howe is right to pick him over Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa.

Newcastle failed to win the match, though, as Adrien Truffert scored late on to hand Bournemouth all three points, seemingly leaving Howe even closer to the sack.

Premier League reveal why Will Osula’s goal was allowed to stand

The Premier League Match Centre has revealed, via X, that the goal was given because of “clear evidence” that Bournemouth’s number nine, Evanilson, played the ball forward into the Dane’s path.

He was challenging Bruno Guimaraes for the ball in the centre of the park before getting in front of his compatriot and poking it forward to Osula.

Evanilson will have been left red-faced by the error, but his blushes were spared after Truffer’s late winner.
