NDC records 10 million new members 24 hours after Peter Obi’s defection — Adebayo

The South West Coordinator of the Obi-Kwankwaso (OK) Movement, Dr Adefolaseye Adebayo, has claimed that about 10 million Nigerians registered with the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) within 24 hours of former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, joining the party.

According to her, the surge in registration reflects the strength of Obi’s nationwide appeal rather than party structure alone.

DAILY POST reports that Obi and former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, on Sunday left the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the NDC ahead of the 2027 general elections, a development that has since generated mixed reactions across the political space.

Reacting during an interview on Arise TV on Monday, Adebayo dismissed claims that Obi’s political influence was declining, insisting that his support base cuts across all six geopolitical zones of the country.

She said the former Labour Party presidential candidate’s appeal is driven more by personality and perceived competence than by party affiliation.

“Mr Peter Obi has a lot of followership across Nigeria. You can’t say that Obi’s chances or the chance of the South East reduced drastically,” she said.

Adebayo further stated that the reported registration spike into the NDC within 24 hours of Obi’s entry underscores the scale of his political influence, claiming that “24 hours after Peter Obi left ADC, 10 million Nigerians registered with NDC and that says a lot.”

The claim comes amid ongoing debates over shifting political alignments and emerging coalitions ahead of the next general elections.
