Members of the National Assembly on Tuesday adjourned plenary proceedings until October 13, 2026, shortly after returning from a 68-day annual recess.
The federal lawmakers had commenced their 2026 annual recess on Thursday, July 23, following the conclusion of plenary proceedings in both chambers.
The Senate had initially fixed September 15 for resumption but later extended the recess to September 29 to allow for repairs to the sound systems in both chambers of the National Assembly.
Upon resumption on Tuesday, lawmakers held brief proceedings before adjourning again until October 13.
The latest adjournment followed deliberations on the country’s security situation in the Senate and the consideration of fiscal matters in the House of Representatives.
In the Senate, lawmakers agreed on the October 13 resumption date to allow for the conclusion of the forthcoming National Security Summit.
The summit is expected to bring together members of the National Assembly, service chiefs, security agencies and other stakeholders to examine Nigeria’s security challenges and develop strategies to strengthen intelligence gathering and territorial security.
The Senate also extended the implementation period for the capital component of the 2025 Appropriation Act.
Similarly, the House of Representatives adjourned after considering key fiscal measures.
A lawmaker who spoke with our correspondent said both chambers are expected to resume full legislative activities and committee assignments when they reconvene in October.
The latest adjournment means lawmakers will spend only a brief period in plenary before commencing another break, with legislative activities scheduled to resume fully after the October 13 date.
