Give legislative backing to Nigeria’s automotive policy, NADDC urges NASS

National Assembly 8

The National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) appealed to the National Assembly to urgently ensure Nigeria’s automotive is backed by law.

Director General of the Council, Otunba Joseph Osanipin while speaking in Abuja on Monday during a capacity building programme for the House of Representatives Press Corps insisted that investors will always remain cautious unless the industry’s regulatory framework is backed by legislation.

He pointed out that Nigeria’s Automotive Industry Development Plan though, provided the direction for the sector, but that “long term industrial growth requires legal certainty,” adding that manufacturers consider “large scale investment in vehicle assembly and component production need assurance that policy incentives will endure beyond administrative cycles.*

The workshop was organized by the NADDC in collaboration with the House of Committee on Media and Public Affairs with the theme; “Strengthening Sectoral Policy Communication and Legislative Reporting on Nigeria’s Automotive Industry Development.”

Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Akin Rotimi in his remarks said the main aim of the training was to improve the depth, accuracy and context of parliamentary reporting on the automotive sector while enhancing public confidence in policy initiatives.

In their separate messages, Chairman, FCT Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Grace Ike, and Chairman of the House of Representatives Press Corps, Gboyega Onadiran reiterated the strategic importance of the automotive industry to Nigeria’s economy, and need for deeper understanding of issues by reporters to effectively communicate them.
