Team Nigeria’s athletics contingent has received a major boost ahead of the start of the track and field events at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, with two of the country’s brightest stars, Ella Onojuvwevwo and Temitope Adeshina, arriving in Glasgow, Scotland.
World-class 400m runner Ella Onojuvwevwo linked up with her teammates on Sunday, bringing renewed excitement and confidence to the Nigerian camp ahead of Monday’s opening day of athletics competition at Scotstoun Stadium.
The 21-year-old, currently ranked 18th in the world in the women’s 400m, arrived wearing a broad smile as she received a warm welcome from teammates and officials.
Her presence immediately lifted the mood in camp as Nigeria intensified preparations for the Games.
Onojuvwevwo heads to Glasgow in fine form after posting a season’s best of 49.47 seconds in the one-lap event, underlining her status as one of Nigeria’s leading medal prospects.
Also joining the team is high jump star Temitope Adeshina, whose arrival has further strengthened Team Nigeria’s hopes of a successful campaign.
The three-time Nigerian champion is currently ranked 13th in the world and holds the national high jump record with a season’s best clearance of 1.97m. Brimming with confidence, Adeshina’s presence has added to the optimism within the Nigerian camp.
With the arrival of both athletes, Team Nigeria now looks well-positioned as the athletics programme gets underway on Monday, July 27, at Scotstoun Stadium, where the country’s stars will begin their quest for Commonwealth Games medals.
