Airtel Africa has finalized a major partnership with Elon Musk’s Starlink to roll out “Direct-to-Cell” satellite technology across its 14 markets. Starting in 2026, the service will allow standard smartphones to connect directly to satellites, bypassing the need for traditional towers or fibre in remote areas.
The collaboration aims to eliminate mobile dead zones for Airtel’s 170 million+ subscribers, initially supporting text and basic data before scaling to high-speed broadband.
While the move signals a shift toward a capital-light expansion model to reach underserved regions, the rollout remains subject to country-specific regulatory approvals and security compliance.
