Nigeria’s latest awards run in Dallas offers more than a collection of trophies: it is another snapshot of how Nigerian music continues to travel, evolve and create space for different forms of talent. At the 2026 AFRIMMA, Davido, Tems, BNXN, DJ Tunez, Ruger, Fola and others turned a night of celebration into a showcase of Nigeria’s creative breadth.
AFRIMMA returned to Dallas, Texas, on September 12 after a two-year break, with a format that expanded beyond the traditional awards ceremony. Hosted at Annette Strauss Square, the event brought together African artistes, DJs, performers, food vendors and fashion brands, placing music within a broader celebration of African creativity.
For Nigeria, the evening became a particularly strong showcase, with honours spread across albums, songs, regional categories, DJ culture, gospel, rap, comedy and visual storytelling.
At the heart of the night was Davido, whose fifth studio album, 5ive, claimed Album of the Year. Released in April 2025, the project features collaborations with Chris Brown, Victoria Monét, Becky G, Omah Lay and Victony, while exploring themes of growth, hope and personal transformation.
The recognition adds to a run of international attention around the project. Davido’s With You featuring Omah Lay earned a 2026 Grammy nomination for Best African Music Performance, while 5ive continued to attract global recognition.
Davido had arrived in Dallas as AFRIMMA’s leading nominee, with five nominations. He did not, however, take home Artist of the Year, which went to Congolese star Fally Ipupa, who also received the Crossing Boundaries with Music honour.
When The Song Becomes A Partnership
Another defining Nigerian victory came through BNXN and producer Sarz.
Their collaboration, “Back Outside”, won Song of the Year, bringing together BNXN’s vocals and Sarz’s production as part of their joint project, The Game Needs Us. The recognition puts the creative relationship between artiste and producer at the centre of one of the night’s biggest honours.
It also reflects the increasingly collaborative nature of contemporary Nigerian music, where production, songwriting, performance and visual direction often intersect to create records capable of travelling well beyond their original markets.
A Wider Stage For Nigerian Voices
DJ Tunez added another dimension to Nigeria’s showing, winning Best DJ Africa. The Nigerian-American DJ and producer emerged ahead of nominees including DJ Spinall, Uncle Waffles, DJ Obi, Major League DJs and DJ Kaywise.
His recognition extends to a career closely associated with the global Afrobeats movement, including his long-running relationship with Wizkid’s Starboy Entertainment.
Tems also claimed Best Female West Africa, while Ruger won Best Male West Africa. Phyno took Best Male Rap Act, Fola was named Best Newcomer, and Mercy Chinwo won Best Gospel.
Patoranking won Best Male Reggae/Dancehall, Director Pink received Best Video Director, and Real Warri Pikin took Best Stand-Up Comedian. Victony won the Fans Choice Award, while Timaya received the Timeless Impact Award.
The Nigerian honours also extended beyond music. Nasty Blaq, Uche Montana and Victor Osimhen were among the country’s recipients.
AFRIMMA’s 2026 return also marked a shift in how the organisers presented the celebration. The awards were combined with the festival’s first music festival in Dallas, bringing music together with fashion, food and cultural experiences.
That broader format gives the Nigerian showing a larger context. The night was not simply about individual winners; it placed Nigerian music within a wider African creative ecosystem and gave artistes, producers, DJs and other cultural players a shared platform.
For Nigerian music, the Dallas stage continues an increasingly familiar story: recognition is arriving across different categories, while the creative economy around the music keeps expanding.
