Amnesty International has raised the alarm over the alleged blockade of NDC presidential candidate, Peter Obi, from entering Benue State, calling it a dangerous escalation of political intolerance.
The rights group accused political thugs of barricading Gboko Road in Makurdi, putting Obi’s entourage at risk and sparking fresh fears over the safety of political campaigns.

In a strongly worded statement, Amnesty declared:
“No Nigerian needs anybody’s permission or prior notification to visit any part of the country at all times. No state is a no-go area for any person or supporters of any political party.”
Amnesty said the alleged deployment of heavily armed youths against a rival candidate amounts to outright political repression and could erode confidence in Nigeria’s democracy.
The organisation said the Benue State Government has questions to answer, especially if state-linked actors or vigilante groups were involved.
It further alleged that repression is spreading nationwide — from hotels being pressured not to host opposition meetings to direct attacks on rival party activities.

Amnesty expressed concern over the failure of authorities to investigate such incidents and prosecute perpetrators.
“Alarming intolerance, incitements and other efforts to undermine democracy must be decisively addressed now,” it warned.
As political activities intensify, the rights group urged all parties and candidates to publicly reject violence and thuggery, insisting that peaceful participation and a level playing field are non-negotiable for credible elections.
