President Bola Tinubu will arrive in the United Kingdom on Wednesday for a state visit aimed at strengthening diplomatic, economic and cultural relations between both countries.
The visit, which formally begins on Thursday, March 18, will see Tinubu and his wife, Oluremi Tinubu, hosted by King Charles III at Windsor Castle.
This was disclosed in an article by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Temitope Ajayi, on Sunday.
According to the statement, the visit will showcase the enduring relationship between Nigeria and the UK and further deepen cooperation between both countries.
“President Bola Tinubu will land at the airport on March 17, 2026 to begin a historic State Visit that will showcase to the world the unique bond that exists between Nigeria and the United Kingdom,” the statement read.
Fifth Nigerian leader to receive honour
According to the aide, Tinubu will become the fifth Nigerian leader to be honoured with a state visit by the British Crown.
Previous Nigerian leaders hosted at the highest diplomatic level include Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Yakubu Gowon, Shehu Shagari and Ibrahim Babangida.
While those visits were held at Buckingham Palace, Tinubu will become the first Nigerian leader to be hosted at Windsor Castle.
Ajayi said the visit “carries symbolism beyond ceremony” and reflects the evolution of relations between both countries from historical ties to deeper diplomatic and economic cooperation.
He noted that Nigeria remains the only African country whose leader has been hosted on a state visit by the British government five times.
Longstanding Nigeria–UK relations
Nigeria and the United Kingdom have maintained strong diplomatic relations since Nigeria gained independence in 1960.
Over the decades, cooperation between both nations has expanded across sectors including education, defence, technology, sports and culture.
Security collaboration has also remained a key pillar of the partnership, particularly in areas of counter-terrorism and military training.
“The United Kingdom continues to support Nigeria in areas such as counter-terrorism training, intelligence collaboration and military capacity building,” the statement said.
Trade and economic partnership
Nigeria is the second-largest trading partner of the UK in Africa, with annual bilateral trade estimated at about £8bn.
Economic ties between both countries were further strengthened through the UK–Nigeria Enhanced Trade and Investment Partnership signed in 2024.
According to Ajayi, the partnership is designed “to boost bilateral trade beyond current levels while removing barriers to commerce and expanding cooperation in sectors such as agriculture, technology, renewable energy, fintech, manufacturing, retail and the creative economy.”
The framework also aims to promote job creation through increased private sector investment and support Nigeria’s economic reform agenda.
Creative industry and investment opportunities
The statement also highlighted growing cooperation between Nigeria and the UK in the creative sector.
Nigeria’s film, music and digital media industries have gained global recognition in recent years, creating new opportunities for investment and collaboration.
Ajayi noted that the partnership provides “a platform for structured cooperation in the creative industries including film production, music, fashion and digital media while attracting more British investment into Nigeria’s fast-growing creative economy.”
Strong diaspora connection
The United Kingdom hosts one of the largest Nigerian diaspora populations, estimated at more than 500,000 people.
Nigerians living in the UK contribute significantly to both economies through entrepreneurship, professional services and remittances sent back home.
The UK is also one of the top destinations for Nigerian students.
The statement noted that “over 53,000 Nigerians were enrolled in UK universities as of 2023,” adding that Nigeria remains one of the leading sources of international students in Britain.
Expected engagements
During the visit, Tinubu is expected to hold bilateral talks with Keir Starmer at 10 Downing Street.
He will also participate in a business summit involving Nigerian and British investors to promote opportunities across sectors such as mining, infrastructure, agriculture, energy and technology.
Ajayi said the visit “represents an opportunity to advance a relationship that has evolved from shared history into a modern partnership built on investment, innovation and mutual growth.”
He added that the state visit would also provide a platform for Nigeria to present its economic reform agenda and attract greater foreign investment into Africa’s largest economy.
