4 Smart Things You Can Save in Apple Wallet

Apple Wallet has quietly become one of the most powerful features on the iPhone. While most people use it only for payments and loyalty cards, Apple has expanded Wallet far beyond that. From digital IDs to car keys, Apple Wallet can now replace several everyday items you still carry physically—often without you realizing it.

Because Apple continues to add new features, many users miss out on what Apple Wallet can actually do. If you own an iPhone or Apple Watch, these Apple Wallet features could make your daily routine and travel much easier.

1. Your U.S. Passport and Digital ID

Apple Wallet now supports Digital ID, allowing you to add your U.S. passport and use it at TSA checkpoints for domestic flights. You can present your Digital ID directly from your iPhone or Apple Watch, which helps speed up airport security.

Digital ID is currently accepted at over 250 U.S. airports, with Apple working to expand support to more locations, businesses, and identity-verification services. Even with Digital ID, travelers should still carry a physical passport, especially for international trips.

Adding a passport to Apple Wallet is simple. Open the Wallet app, tap the add button, select Digital ID, and follow the prompts. You’ll scan your passport and verify your identity. Apple encrypts this data, requires Face ID or Touch ID before sharing it, and clearly shows what information is being provided.

2. Driver’s License and State ID in Apple Wallet

You can also store your driver’s license or state ID in Apple Wallet. These digital IDs can be used at Apple Stores, select businesses, venues, and TSA checkpoints at supported airports.

As of November 2025, Apple Wallet supports IDs from 14 U.S. states, with more states expected soon. To add one, open Apple Wallet, tap the add button, and select Driver’s License or State ID. You’ll scan both sides of your ID and complete identity verification. Once approved by your state, it appears in your Wallet.

While convenient, a digital driver’s license does not fully replace the physical card. You’ll still need the original ID in situations such as law enforcement requests.

3. Digital Keys for Cars, Homes, Hotels, and Scooters

Apple Wallet can also act as a digital key for supported cars, hotel rooms, homes, and scooters. When you approach a compatible lock or vehicle, your iPhone or Apple Watch automatically displays the key and allows you to unlock it using NFC.

Major hotel chains like Hilton and Hyatt support Apple Wallet room keys, giving access to rooms and shared facilities. Several car manufacturers—including Audi, BMW, BYD, Genesis, Hyundai, and Kia—support Apple Wallet car keys for select models. Gogoro currently supports scooter keys.

Digital keys are usually added through the provider’s app using the “Add to Apple Wallet” option. Home locks can be added through Apple Home if the lock is compatible.

4. Transit Cards and Public Transport Passes

If you commute using public transportation, Apple Wallet may be able to store your transit card. Supported transit systems allow riders to add their cards to Apple Wallet for faster, contactless payments.

For example, Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) supports Clipper cards in Apple Wallet. To add a transit card, open the Wallet app, tap add, and choose Transit Card. If your card isn’t listed, check your transit provider’s app.

In some cities, Apple Pay can be used directly to pay transit fares using the payment cards already stored in Apple Wallet. Apple says transit services in nine U.S. cities currently support either transit cards or Apple Pay for rides.
