Kaizer Chiefs eye Stanley Nwabali amid keeper injury crisis

South African giants Kaizer Chiefs have renewed their interest in Nigeria international goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, following the appendix surgery of first-choice keeper Brandon Petersen, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

According to Afrik-Foot, the club have submitted an offer to sign the free agent as they seek cover for Petersen.

Petersen underwent the operation on Friday and was expected to be discharged from the hospital on Monday, though his return to action remains unclear, with recovery from an appendectomy typically taking between three and six weeks.

His absence was felt immediately as Chiefs lost the Soweto derby 3-0 to Orlando Pirates with Bruce Bvuma deputising between the posts, leaving the Soweto giants 11 points adrift in the Betway Premiership title race.

Nwabali, 29, has been without a club since leaving Chippa United earlier this year, making him an attractive free agent option.

The goalkeeper had previously drawn interest from Chiefs during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where his performances helped the Super Eagles claim bronze, and the club have now moved to formalise their interest.

His familiarity with South African football, having made 66 appearances in the Betway Premiership, and his reputation as one of Nigeria’s most reliable goalkeepers in recent years make him a compelling candidate for the role.

Chiefs are also dealing with injuries to Rushwin Dortley, George Matlou and Given Msimango, piling further pressure on their squad depth at a critical stage of the season.

Petersen had been in strong form before his illness, having helped Chiefs defeat Pirates 2-1 in last season’s Nedbank Cup final to end a decade-long trophy drought.
