Tinubu Didn’t Remove Fuel Subsidy, He Only Announced It — APC Chieftain Biodun Abiodun
A chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Biodun Ajiboye, has said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu did not remove the fuel subsidy but merely announced its removal.
Ajiboye made the claim during an interview on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme on Monday.
According to him, there was no realistic way for the subsidy regime to continue by the time President Tinubu assumed office in May 2023.
“Right as we speak today, in May 2023, whether we like it or not, there was no possibility of continuing with subsidy,” Ajiboye said.
“Tinubu did not remove it; he only announced the removal. Some people ask why he would announce subsidy removal without preparation. How was it possible to continue with it when he came into power?”
Ajiboye added that the current administration is focused on reversing negative economic trends, claiming that unemployment has dropped significantly from about 33 percent to roughly 4 percent due to growth in other sectors of the economy.

President Tinubu did not remove fuel subsidy in isolation, he announced the reality that the subsidy regime was no longer sustainable and that honesty was necessary for Nigeria’s economic survival. Leadership sometimes requires speaking hard truths, not pretending. Today, Nigerians are beginning to see and feel the benefits of bold economic reforms from increased government revenues to better fiscal planning and long term economic stability.
Despite early difficulties, the direction is becoming clearer. Infrastructure development, economic restructuring and policy consistency are laying a stronger foundation for growth. These reforms are not cosmetic, they are structural and history will judge them more fairly than the noise of the moment.
What is most striking is that President Tinubu has governed without bias or bitterness. Even regions and groups that did not support him during the elections are receiving attention, appointments and developmental consideration. This reflects statesmanship, not politics of revenge.
Nigeria needs unity, fairness, and honesty in leadership and President Tinubu is demonstrating that governance is about serving the whole nation, not rewarding only supporters. Constructive criticism is welcome, but denial of visible progress helps no one. The country is moving forward and that truth cannot be shouted down.
