Thomas Frank is quickly running out of time to prove himself worthy of leading Tottenham to safety in the Premier League this season.
Tottenham must next face Newcastle United on Tuesday, 10 February, with the potential to move nine points clear of the dropzone, despite their 2-0 defeat to Man United.
Of course, Frank will be without Cristian Romero following his red card at Old Trafford. But that could be more of a blessing than a curse, given his tendency to do stupid things in important moments.
Heading into the game, Mick Brown told Football Insider that the Tottenham boss could soon be sacked, especially if Spurs move any closer to the bottom three spots.
Thomas Frank has only continued Ange Postecoglou’s awful form
Many supporters were shocked by the decision to part ways with Ange Postecoglou during the summer, with the former Celtic boss leading his side to the Europa League title.
But it was his team’s inconsistencies across all competitions that sealed his fate. The Lilywhites ended the 2024-25 Premier League campaign in 17th, 13 points above the dropzone.
Relegation never really seemed like a reality, but the fear was always there. This season, the threat of Championship football is back once again, but Spurs are even closer this time.
Should Leeds United topple Chelsea, Nottingham Forest beat Wolves, and West Ham beat Man United, the threat of relegation could very quickly become a possible outcome for the North London club.
Tottenham boss could be finished with defeat to Newcastle
Sadly for Frank, the blame falls on his shoulders, but it does appear that he is a victim of the mentality that Postecoglou created during his time at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Taking to X (10 February), journalist Matt Law revealed: “Over the past 38 games, the same number as an entire PL campaign combined between this season and last, Spurs have taken 37 points. Of the clubs that have been in the PL this season and last, only Wolverhampton Wanderers have a worse record.”
During Postecoglou’s last 13 Premier League games in charge, Spurs won two games, drew two, and lost the other nine, including an embarrassing 4-1 defeat to Brighton on the final day.
The current manager is sliding closer and closer to the exit doors, and should he continue this harrowing form against the Magpies, there may be no other choice but to find a new figure for the dugout.
