Thiago Silva’s son set to make international debut

Thiago Silva’s son has taken the next step in his football career after receiving an international call-up.

However, Chelsea youngster Iago is set to make his debut for a different country to his dad.

Silva has 113 caps for Brazil and has represented the Selecao at the last four World Cups.

His 14-year-old son is in line to star for England at youth level, though.

Iago has been named in the Three Lions’ latest Under-15 squad for two matches in Cyprus next week.

The defender previously attended a training camp with the side at St. George’s Park in October.

Head coach Matt Thorpe has now included Iago in his 24-player squad for the trip to Cyprus.

The Young Lions are set to face Cyprus on Tuesday before a match against the USA on Saturday, February 14.

Iago will be hoping to make his international debut during the trip as he continues his development.

He is already joined in Chelsea’s youth system by his older brother Isago.

The 17-year-old centre-back is a member of the Blues’ Under-18 side after signing scholar terms last year.

Both youngsters joined the club during their dad’s four-year spell at Stamford Bridge.

Silva starred for Chelsea between 2020 and 2024, making 155 appearances for the Blues.

During that time, he also won the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup.

After a spell in his native Brazil with boyhood club Fluminense, the 41-year-old returned to Europe last month.

Silva has re-joined Porto on a deal until the end of the season in a bid to regain his place in the Brazil squad ahead of the World Cup.

His last appearance for the national team came in their quarter-final defeat to Croatia at the previous tournament in 2022.

Family affair

Although Iago may not be following in his footsteps at international level, Silva could still see his sons play for Chelsea in the future.

He previously spoke of his desire to watch them in action for his old club one day.

Silva admitted: “I have to say, at every club I’ve been at, I’ve felt a lot of love from the clubs themselves and the fans, but here it feels a little bit different, because of the fact that my kids are playing in the team too.

“For me, it would be a dream to see them play professionally at Chelsea. I love watching them, ultimately, and I try to help them as much as I can.

“I love seeing my kids playing here, my wife is here all the time and even wants to be at every away game.

“I think she realises that time is running out slightly, so she wants to make the most of the last few years of my career.

“When I got here, it felt like love at first sight, to be honest, and I’m still very proud to be here.”
