Sources: Rohl wants rid of Martin signing as Rangers man viewed as January impact signing in England

Sheffield United are leading the race to sign Rangers outcast Joe Rothwell as he eyes an Ibrox exit just six months on from joining the club last summer.

Rothwell joined Rangers from Bournemouth on a three-year deal in July after he had helped Leeds to the Championship title last season.

The English midfielder linked back up with new Gers boss Russell Martin, who he had played under while previously on loan at Southampton, but he lasted until October before being sacked after just 17 games at the helm.

After dropping out of the Rangers team following his exit, Football Insider revealed last month that Rothwell was being eyed by numerous Championship sides ahead of the January window.

He has not featured at all since 22 November due to fitness concerns, with Sheffield United now leading the way to land his signature, as I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast.

Sheffield United frontrunners to sign Rothwell in January

Sources have since told Football Insider that Rothwell has played his last game for Rangers, as Rohl does not see a way back for him into his squad right now.

Defensive midfielder Tochi Chukwuani recently joined Rangers to bolster their depth in that position, and so Rothwell could soon be on his way to Bramall Lane.

Speaking on the Inside Track podcast, I said: “I would fully expect Joe Rothwell to leave Rangers in this window. He’s not figuring in the plans of Danny Rohl.

I think he last played a Scottish Premiership game back in October. He was brought in by Russell Martin from Bournemouth last summer, but Rohl has his own plans and is looking to move Rothwell on.

I think the player himself is keen to move on in search of regular first-team football as well. It does seem that Sheffield United are the team that are leading the chase for Rothwell.

Chris Wilder is looking to strengthen his midfield options and we know that Rothwell has got good Championship experience. He helped Leeds win the title last season, and is someone who could come straight in to make an impact.

Wilder sees him as somebody who will improve that Sheffield United midfield, and maybe give them a lift as they look to make a late charge for the playoffs in the Championship.

Rangers are battling Celtic to sign Danish midfielder Silas Andersen

Rohl clearly wants to freshen up his midfield options this month, with Sunderland’s Dan Neil targeted by Rangers as Rothwell and Nico Raskin potentially prepare to move on.

Football Insider have revealed that Rangers and Celtic are both racing to sign Andersen in the January transfer window.

The 21-year-old midfielder registered four goals and three assists in 39 appearances for Swedish side BK Hacken in the 2025 campaign following a January move from Dutch club Utrecht.

It would reportedly take a “decent fee” to prise him from the grasp of the Allsvenskan club, who have no plans to lose him this month, and so the Gers may well look elsewhere in their search for a new-look midfield.
