Members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have made it clear that they are not stopping the impeachment move against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, even as many people keep pushing for a political settlement.
Speaking during a live press briefing in Port Harcourt on Friday, the lawmakers said the governor has lost their trust and accused him of blackmailing and intimidating the Assembly. According to them, Fubara and his deputy allegedly violated provisions of the 1999 Constitution, leaving the House with no option but to activate its powers.
While appreciating President Bola Tinubu for stepping into the crisis, the lawmakers asked Speaker Martin Amaewhule to reconvene the Assembly so legislative business could continue.
In a twist, four lawmakers who had earlier called for dialogue changed their minds and openly declared support for pushing the impeachment process forward.
Not long after the briefing, the lawmakers moved straight to the Assembly chambers, where they officially began proceedings to advance the impeachment. During plenary, they unanimously agreed to investigate allegations of gross misconduct against both the governor and his deputy.
“This vote clearly reflects the decision of the House,” Speaker Amaewhule said, as he called on the state’s Chief Judge to set up an investigative panel.
