Nigeria Needs Active Citizens, Not Passive Graduates — Lagos Deputy Governor, Hamzat

The Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Obafemi Hamzat, has said Nigeria no longer needs passive graduates but active citizens capable of solving national challenges.

Hamzat made the remark on Tuesday in Osogbo, Osun State, at the 15th convocation lecture of Fountain University, where he served as chairman of the occasion. He was represented by the Lagos State Commissioner for Home Affairs, Layode Olanrewaju.

Addressing concerns that many school leavers lack skills required in today’s labour market, Hamzat urged graduating students to see the moment as a transition into real-life responsibilities, stressing the need for compassion, wisdom and practical application of knowledge.

“As graduates, you sure have a role to play. The world does not need more passive graduates. It needs active citizens, architects of solutions and stewards of our shared future,” he said. He added that beyond specialised knowledge and critical thinking, graduates must cultivate wisdom and compassion to navigate life’s challenges.

In his convocation lecture titled ‘From Faith to Fortune: Building a Prosperous Ummah Through Leadership, Education, Innovation, and Economic Empowerment,’ the guest lecturer, Kazeem Adeduntan, urged Islamic scholars to expand their roles from religious custodians to economic leaders.

Adeduntan, founder and president of Sequoia Holdings, described Muslims globally as “sleeping giants” and called for expertise in areas such as Islamic digital ethics, venture finance and biomedical law. He said moral leadership must extend beyond mosques into boardrooms and digital spaces.

Earlier, Fountain University Vice Chancellor, Ramota Karim, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to knowledge, character and service, disclosing that over N2.7 billion was invested in capital projects during the academic session.

  8. You don’t need someone who loves you dramatically in public, but neglects you in private. You need someone who loves you deeply, protects your heart, even when no one is watching.
Because love is not how it looks outside, it’s how it feels when the both of you are in secret. Trust me, love is still much beautiful when you’re with the right person ❤️
