Expert drops West Ham relegation verdict – 'This is what will decide their fate'

Injuries could be the decisive factor in whether West Ham manage to avoid relegation to the Championship.

That is according to ex-Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes West Ham currently have all the “positive momentum” to avoid the drop.

West Ham have only lost one of their last six Premier League games, although they had to settle for a 0-0 draw against Bournemouth last time out.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side remain 18th in the table, but their impressive run of form has reduced the gap to safety to just two points.

West Ham feeling positive of Premier League safety

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes the relegation battle is “hard to call.”

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness thinks momentum and injuries will be the key factors in who stays up.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast:  “Well, you’ve got to look at those three clubs and the one with momentum right now, positive momentum, is West Ham. They have put together some good results.

“They felt they were unlucky at the weekend not to get all three points and I agree. So they’re, you know, they’re feeling that momentum. They do feel they can go on, and they can get out of this.

“It was a really good run that they had for about three or four games that actually put things together and put them back in the race when everybody thought they were finished.

“So there’s a feeling, I think, that they can do something. West Ham, really right now it’s hard to call. Momentum is a big thing in this race. As I say, it’s still a long way to go, but it’s going to be injuries that I think ultimately will decide the fate of one of those three teams.”

West Ham make Axel Disasi decision

Axel Disasi’s loan move from Chelsea has strengthened West Ham’s backline further, with the 27-year-old having started every Premier League game since his arrival, and he is yet to suffer defeat.

Disasi had not played a minute of first team football at Chelsea before his arrival at the London Stadium, and West Ham could now look to secure the Frenchman on a permanent basis in the summer.

The defender has no future at Stamford Bridge, and will be eager to leave the club permanently in the next transfer window.
