Mrs Ijeoma Popoola, Deputy Editor-in-Chief (DEIC) of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Friday buried her father, Mr Bennett Okpara, an educationist who died aged 85.
The burial service was held at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Umuezedike, Umuobom Ideato South LGA, Imo State.
Clergymen from the parish archdeaconry attended, including Rev. Onyedikachi Agu from Lagos West Diocese.
Late Okpara, fondly called “Dimkpaabuo,” was a lay reader at St. Paul’s Anglican Church.
He also served as pastor’s warden, chorister, and financial secretary in his community.
In his sermon, Rev. Obiora Okonkwo described Okpara as dedicated to his family, church, and community.
He said Okpara lived an exemplary life that would be remembered by all.
“Who among us here has ever seen late Okpara misbehave or act questionably? None. That speaks volumes about his lifetime,” he said.
Speaking at the burial, Popoola described her father as “unique.”
“I am grateful to God to have had you as my father.
“You were there for us. With your modest income as a teacher, you provided us quality education and set a perfect example.
“Mpa, that I will miss you greatly is an understatement. Your fatherly role cannot be overemphasised. But most of all, I will miss your personality.
“You will forever occupy a place in my heart,” she said.
Mr Ikechukwu Okpara, another son of the deceased, described his father as a role model and gifted teacher.
He said Okpara worked as a school teacher for 35 years and excelled in every role.
The Chairman of Umuobom Teachers Association, Mr Chris Unachukwu, said the association would miss Okpara’s advice and support.
He added that his legacy would continue to have a positive impact.
In his tribute, Mr Chinedu Nwoye, State Chief of Protocol/Deputy Chief of Staff to the Governor of Anambra State, described Okpara as an extraordinary man of many parts.
He added that Okpara lived a remarkable life as a family man, mentor, bridge builder, visionary leader, God-fearing individual, and benefactor to many.
Mr Amos Anyalechi, President General of Umuobom Ancient Kingdom Town Union, said Okpara’s death is a major loss to his family and the community.
“The community is saddened by the death of this dogged, loyal, and committed leader, who played remarkable roles in the development of our community,” he said.
The wake-keep and service of songs for the deceased were held at the family compound on Thursday.
Family, friends, church members, and community leaders paid tribute to Okpara.
The lying-in-state was organised at the family compound on Friday morning before the funeral service at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Umuezedike. Staff of NAN also attended. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
