A serving member of the Osun State House of Assembly, Adesina Atanda Rabiu, has announced his resignation from the ruling Accord Party in a development that has elicited potential political realignment ahead of the August 15 governorship election in the state.
The lawmaker, representing Iwo State Constituency tendered his resignation letter to the House about three weeks after he, alongside other legislators in the state defected to Accord, from the Peoples Democratic Party.
Rabiu, in a letter he addressed to the Speaker, Wale Egbedun, said the reason for his resignation his personal and he would like to keep it confidential.
According to the Chairman, House Committee on Home Affairs, Culture and Tourism in the 8th Assembly, his resignation has immediate effect.
Addresing Egbedun in the letter, Rabiu said, “I greet you sir, distinguished leader, for your visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to the 8th Assembly and Accord Party. May your efforts be blessed with success and your tenure be filled with wisdom and prosperity.
I hereby tender my resignation from the Accord Party, effective immediately. This decision is personal, and I would like to keep the reasons to myself.
Thank you for the opportunity to be part of the party. I pray that God continues to guide and bless you in your leadership role.”
However, in a dramatic turn, about three hours after the letter started going viral and eliciting conversations which tend to be against the re-election bid of Governor Ademola Adeleke of Accord Party, Rabiu announced the withdrawal of his resignation.
Rabiu rescinded his decision in a video sighted by THE POINT on Monday while being flanked by the spokesperson to Governor Adeleke, Olawale Rasheed and Speaker Wale Egbedun.
He declared that he remained in Accord Party and vowed his total support for Adeleke’s second term ambition after meeting the governor’s aide and the Assembly Speaker.
“I, Hon. Adesina Atanda Rabiu of Iwo State Constituency and the Chairman, House Committee on Home Affairs; concerning my resignation from Accord Party for about two to three hours ago, I have now withdrawn the letter. I now remain in Accord Party and in support of Governor Ademola Adeleke’s re-election bid on August 15, 2026. I will work for his re-election success,” the legislator was heared saying in the video.
Recall that 25 of the 26 members of the Osun Assembly, on February 27, 2026, announced their defection from PDP to Accord, leaving out the sole lawmaker inder the platform of the opposition All Progressives Congress.
Speculations were rife on social media when the withdrawn letter was made public that Rabiu may be planning to defect to the All Progressives Congress and support the party’s candidate for the forthcoming poll.
