Chelsea’s goalkeeper situation is honestly one of the most frustrating

Chelsea’s goalkeeper situation is honestly one of the most frustrating things about this entire project.

The board have committed to an extreme press-baiting possession system, a style of football that only truly works if you have a world-class goalkeeper who is elite with his feet. Think of a prime Alisson or Ederson. A keeper who can pass under pressure, start attacks and still be dominant with his hands.

Yet after spending billions, Chelsea still haven’t signed that goalkeeper.

We are now almost three years into this so-called project, the phase where the team should be hitting its stride, and somehow the most important position for this system is still unresolved.

Look at the pattern.

Mauricio Pochettino benched Robert Sanchez for Djordje Petrovic.

Enzo Maresca considered starting Filip Jorgensen before deciding Sanchez was still the better option despite his flaws.

Now Rosenior is the third consecutive Chelsea coach who cannot decide which goalkeeper to trust.

When three different managers keep rotating between two goalkeepers, it tells you everything: there is no convincing solution.

And the most frustrating part? Chelsea have had multiple opportunities to fix this.

In summer 2024, the club replaced Petrovic with Jorgensen — another “project” goalkeeper rather than an established elite one.

Then last summer, Chelsea spent weeks looking at AC Milan and France No.1 Mike Maignan… only to walk away because they didn’t want to meet the valuation.

A club that has spent over a billion pounds suddenly became cautious when it came to signing a world-class goalkeeper, the exact profile their system requires.

And honestly, I won’t be surprised if the same thing happens again this summer.

Watch the script:

• Chelsea get “linked” with top goalkeepers

• Negotiations drag on

• The club pulls out because the price is “too high”

• Then we’re told 20-year-old Mike Penders is the solution

And suddenly the PR machine starts telling fans he’s the future.

Meanwhile, the glaring problem in Chelsea’s squad remains unsolved.

For a club trying to build an elite possession team, not solving the goalkeeper situation for three straight years is borderline negligence.
