Abuja Court Arraigns Former Senator Elisha Abbo for Alleged Rape of Minor

Abuja Court Arraigns Former Senator Elisha Abbo for Alleged R+pe of Min%r, Grants ₦50 Million Bail

The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Gwagwalada, on Wednesday arraigned former Adamawa North Senator Ishaku Elisha Abbo over allegations involving a 13-year-old schoolgirl. Abbo and a co-defendant were charged by the Inspector General of Police in a cr+minal case, with both defendants pleading not guilty. The court granted bail to both under strict conditions.

The case, Inspector General of Police v. Senator Ishaku Elisha Abbo & Anor (Charge No: CR/635/25), is being heard before Justice I. Mohammed in Court 50 of the FCT High Court. Counsel for the prosecution, J.B. Anzaku, formally announced their appearance, while Abbo was represented by M.J. Numa, SAN, and the co-defendant by Sunusi Musa, SAN.

When the charges were read in court, both defendants pleaded not guilty. Applications for bail were filed by the defense, and although the prosecution submitted counter-affidavits, it did not oppose bail. Justice Mohammed granted Abbo bail in the sum of ₦50 million with two sureties of good repute and ordered him to surrender his international passport. The co-defendant was granted bail in the sum of ₦40 million. The court adjourned the matter to February 11, 2026.

The allegations arose from an incident reported by a Junior Secondary School 3 student. She said she was approached at home by a family acquaintance and persuaded to accompany them to a relative’s residence, where the former senator allegedly acted inappropriately. Authorities confirmed there is sufficient evidence to proceed to trial.

Abbo has previously been involved in controversies. In 2019, he was fined N50 million for assa¥lting a woman in Abuja and was implicated in a vi%lent att@ck on a former aide in Mubi. The Inspector General of Police’s legal team filed nine counts against Abbo, including offences involving a minor.
