What a miracle!!! 🙏🏼 Relief for parents as students and teachers cheat d+ath as school building collapses in Lagos
Many students and teachers of Odokekere Community Junior Secondary School, Odogunyan, in the Ikorodu Division of Lagos State, narrowly escaped d+ath after a structurally defective building collapsed within the school premises on Thursday.
The incident occurred during school hours while academic activities were ongoing. Witnesses said students and teachers swiftly fled the building moments before it gave way, preventing casualties.
Videos shared on social media, including clips posted by TikTok user B Boss and monitored by Citizens Compass, showed onlookers gathered at the scene as students, teachers and residents thanked God for averting a tragedy.
The incident sparked widespread reactions online, with many expressing gratitude for the lives saved, while others criticised the government over alleged neglect of public school infrastructure.
Following the collapse, the Chairman of Ikorodu North Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Mayor Ameen Apanisile, visited the school for an on-the-spot assessment. In a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Adinlewa Oluwafemi, the chairman said the visit followed an alarming report about the failing structure.
During the inspection, Mayor Apanisile ordered the immediate evacuation of the unsafe section of the school to prevent possible loss of lives or inj¥ries. He stressed that the safety of students, teachers and school staff remains a top priority of his administration.
The council chairman also directed relevant departments and technical officers to urgently assess the defect and carry out necessary structural and safety repairs without delay. He reassured school authorities, parents and residents of Odokekere community of the council’s commitment to protecting lives and ensuring a safe learning environment.
The Ikorodu North LCDA said it would continue to monitor the situation closely to prevent future occurrences. Reports indicate the building collapsed only days after students resumed for the new academic term following the Yuletide break.
