Bystanders were seen grabbing and drinking beer from bottles and crates spilled onto the road after a multiple-vehicle crash involving a truck loaded with beer in Lagos.
In a video circulating online on Tuesday, some people could be seen picking up the bottles and drinking directly from them, while others gathered around the truck and its spilled contents.
The incident occurred at Abalti Barracks inward Ojuelegba and involved a Fuso truck loaded with beer, a Lexus Jeep, a Hyundai Jeep and an Okada.
Confirming the incident, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority said, “A multiple road crash involving a Fuso truck loaded with beer, a Lexus Jeep, a Hyundai Jeep, and an Okada, at Abalti Barracks inward Ojuelegba. The crash resulted in the contents of the truck spilling onto the roadway.”
LASTMA added, “No casualty was recorded. Our personnel are on ground managing the situation, men of the Nigeria Police are also present, while LAWMA officials are clearing the broken bottles from the roadway. Please drive with caution always.”
In a subsequent update, the agency said, “[01:03 P.M] #Update #IncidentManagement All the affected vehicles have been recovered and taken off the road. Equally, the debris on the road have been swept. The road is free for now.”
The footage of the bystanders taking and drinking the beer has since sparked reactions online, with some users questioning the decision to consume drinks from the crash scene.
Desmond, posting as #igetshishi, wrote, “Nigerians instead of helping are already taking advantage of the situation.”
Another user, #Iamowolabi01, said, “What if particles of the broken bottles are inside the beer these guys are drinking.”
#iam_d1guy wrote, “Some people go shayo before dem reach their work today.”
Meanwhile, #omowtff said, “Some people go pack the bottle, and crates go resell am chai.”
